The stench hit me first.

Iron from blood and the cloying, sweet smell of decay.

“Turn around,”Gaksi advised.“Go back to the library.”

“Why?”

“You don’t want to see this.”

Had the gumiho struck again? My shadows gathered and pulsed. I wasn’t running this time.

This was my campus. My school. My territory to defend.

I dashed forward.

Groans, whimpers, and croaky howls echoed ahead. The crow darted in front of me, flapping hard, shielding me from view, and I swiped beside it—

A pile of carnage lay neatly in front of my dormitory. The creatures were stacked like dominos, laid out by the hand of god, dying and writhing in gruesome agony.

On top, standing tall on the bodies of animals, demons, and creatures I couldn’t identify…

His skin was charred, layered and colored, like he’d been cooked alive.

His appearance had lost its boyish charm, instead replaced by scars and a reformed face set in a grotesque sneer.

He had thrown his head back to laugh at my shock, covered in blue, black, and red blood that splattered with his amusement.

Sam turned her face away, unable to look any longer.

But I stared at my spirit saboteur as the idiot, as the fool who thought Hunter Consta might be dead when I had never seen his corpse.

As the fool who never realized he’d return, ready to massacre everything I loved dear.

Carrion, of all types and animals, squirmed under his feet. I spotted the horn of a unicorn. The wing of a griffin. The cloak of a ghost. By their movement, some remained alive, going through the throes of death itself.

Beyond his pile, mutilated blood and body bits shaped the macabre words:

DEMON’S WHORE.

Vultures circled above. Students from all Houses and classes cheered. My world spun.

All my favorite animals were here. Desiccated.

I clutched my stomach and vomited.

“Miss me?” He traipsed down the writhing pile, stomping any still-moving creature beneath him. “I have to say, I sure did miss you. What would my life be without a cheater, a seductress, and a demon lover destroying the fabric of this institution?”

“It doesn’t have to be like this, Hunter.”

I wiped the vomit off my mouth but couldn’t stand.

“Yeah, burning me alive was only for fun, huh? Just a brief side excursion besides sleeping with the devil? Killing off my friends was just a little side plot to you, yeah?”

Before he could reach me, the earth exploded.

Students screamed and cowered. When the dust settled, Reaper detonated, throwing Hunter deep into the pile of death he’d created.

Cameras shattered, dropping to the ground. Broken.
