My shadows whispered along the walls as we walked as if they had an innate knowledge of the labyrinth.

When the hood was abruptly yanked off, we were positioned around a cauldron in a dungeon. Books lined the stone shelves along the walls, bouncing with energy. Sconces lit the room, but they offered little heat. If the actives noticed my shadows playing and self-soothing along the walls, they said nothing.

Wisteria laughed manically, her voice echoing and growing louder in the crowded space.

“You all have been through hell,” she proclaimed. “You’ve been tortured. Demeaned. Thought less of, for choosing this House. For going to a place that welcomes all women, no matter their background. Demonized for liking the feminine things, for choosing flowers with your fighting.”

The cauldron bubbled, spewing pink, glittery liquid into the air. I reached in to touch it, mystified. It felt as soft as sand, as magical as girlhood, and as sturdy as the almighty hands of fate.

“I see our first initiate is ready,” Wisteria said, drawing the attention of all the actives.

“Do you, Luna Deokhye, choose Rose House and all it represents?” Her voice rang through the room, her words conveying the ultimate promise.

My words were confident. “I do.”

Actives seized me, throwing me in.

Energy buzzed in my soul as the liquid embraced me. Shadows sang, vibrating with euphoria. My wings lifted me, hailing the heavens themselves. Power, stronger than anything my shadows could have mastered alone, coursed through me.

“Everyone here has secrets,” the actives chanted in unison.

“We, too, kept a very important secret from you in the name of protecting our values and ensuring only the most noble-hearted join our sisterhood.”

The voices grew louder. “We represent the forgotten. The downtrodden. The rejects from society.”

A black rose, as pure as rebirth, bloomed in the air in front of me. I took it, and it multiplied and wove itself in my head as a crown.

“To you, this is a rose, but to us, this is our heart!” Their voices merged as one.

“WELCOME TO HOUSE WITCH!”
