Aubrey:Anytime, bestie. I’ll make a plan and report back. We will make it to the top together.

Loved the loyalty. At least I had friends.

The only House leader that texted was Lukas.

Lukas:Sorry, sweetheart. Rumors suck.

Luna:I’m nobody’s sweetheart, but thanks.

Lukas:I bet it would dispel rumors if we made out in a public location.

Luna:Nice try.

At least Siren House was still on my side.

Lastly, I checked messages from my father.

Dad:Brace yourself. Your mother paid a werewolf personally to carry her to your dorm. She’s arriving at lightning speed now.

Luna:Pray for me.

Dad:Get rid of your boyfriend, and maybe I will.

I had class today. Mother wouldn’t dare distract me from my studies, would she? I could avoid her that way.

I nearly slipped and fell when I exited my room. Crushed moonstone lined the entryway, with an “X” spray painted over the top of it.

Message received. I was dead to this university.

Students scattered on my path to school. Like a shark among fish, they fled as soon as I walked onto the same sidewalk.

Aubrey, ever the loyal friend, shot death glares at anyone staring.

When I sat down in class, there was a ten feet circle of space around me, save my friends. The usual students who sat around me had stolen other people’s spots, leading to a chain reaction of grumbling. Especially displaced students glared at me from the back of the class, where they stood. Without desks. The entire length of class.

ONLY FOOLS DATE THE FORBIDDEN was written on the chalkboard.

“Now, class, why has this university banned dating demons?” Professor Ansi began.

“They’re evil,” Brayden piped from the front of the class. He had his angel hoodie on again today. I wanted to burn it. Gunner.

“It’s embarrassing,” one of the wall girls shouted. “If you had your own magic, in a normal, organized way through the House system, you wouldn’t even be attracted to the dark magic they convey.”

“It’s unfair,” Hunter shouted, “for your boyfriend to set up your kills and artificially inflate your score.”

Stars. How did I reset the leaderboard? Who counted my gwisin banishment from last night? I didn’t want that! It was a tag team effort, not individual.

“You’ll be expelled,” Cordelia answered next. I was about to pinch her when she continued, “but rumors of dating demons are as old as time. You can’t punish someone over a rumor!”

She patted my leg. Nice try, but nobody doubted the oracle. She’d never been wrong before.

Professor Ansi agreed, then went into all the consequences of dating demons. Bodies disintegrating into a husk. Possession by a vengeful spirit. Girls that disappeared without a trace, pulled through the veil and into god knew where.

As uncomfortable as I was, I knew it could be worse. My mother was definitely at my dorm by now.

I shifted uncomfortably, just worrying about it.

“See me after class, Luna,” Professor Ansi said after her lecture. The terrible three laughed obnoxiously. Great. Even more singled out.
