Mother snarled, and they were all decapitated. Years and years of collector’s items gone, severing the ties to the last of my innocence and memories.

“Do you know what the Reaper will do to you? It will be worse than this! He will destroy everything you are! He will take you so far away from who you used to be that you won’t recognize who you’ve become!”

Her fury escalated, creating a tornado of shadows that whirled around her, spinning out of control. A torrential wind whipped through my bed, desk, clothes, and heart, until nothing was left of my room but my mother and a ravaged layer of black ash on the floor.

“You will not engage with the Reaper again, Luna.” Her voice rang with authority, quenching any rebellion left within me.

“As you wish, Mother.” My fingers combed through the ashes of my former possessions. Water dripped down my face, making a sort of paste with the floor.

When mother departed, she took the last of my dignity with her.

THE ORACLE MUSINGS

What makes a great love story? Is it the looks? The passion? The adventure? I, dear reader, think it’s about choices. Scholars debate whether the Goddess of Spring ever wanted her lover, the King of the Underworld. Was her betrothal to him completely involuntary? Was she a victim?

Or was it a power play, a strategic move to evade the gods and the forces above? Did she run toward the problematic option, not away, because she saw herself as his future queen and not as Demeter’s daughter?

Make good choices today, readers! Today is the turning point for your own great love story. Hades and Persephone were only the beginning!

“Check your messages, Luna!”Gaksi’s voice forced me out of my slumber. Why purchase an alarm clock when you can be disturbed by your own familiar demons?

He threw a phone at me. Where did he get it? I did not know. I didn’t know how I woke up on a blanket or how a basket of clothing lay above the dust beside me, either. His night must have been busy, filled with stealing and compiling replacement items for me.

My eyes glistened. I didn’t deserve Gaksi.

Lukas:You. Me. Siren House Rager. Tonight. Be ready at 11 P.M.

“A suitor!” Gaksi cheered.

His complete disregard for last night’s events was exactly why I loved him so much.

“A slimy one,” I muttered. Should I even go? My life had actually fallen into a pretty predictable routine lately.

Wake. Study. Sleep. Occasionally, chase down a ghost and tally more points to stay competitive. Travel to the campus zoo for the occasional school assignment. Get bullied by Flora, then go hunt down my nemesis. Acquire information from Reaper, convey said information to Flora, and repeat the cycle all over again.

Whenever I retrieved a soul for him, I could barely come up with new information. I was so angry with him that my questions were brief, and his lips grew tighter with each passing conversation, fueling my rage.

“Why did you try to kill me with the Bulgae?” I asked him.

“I was trying to see if an ancient prophecy would hold true.”

A futile, ridiculous task, given that I was not the real moon, only named after it.

“How old are you?” I asked him next. That one was for Cordelia.

“Old enough to have a job. Young enough to be ruled by my father.”

“How’s your relationship with your father?” I asked at the behest of Flora.

“Much like yours with your mother.”

“How do I even know you’re telling the truth?” That one was for me.

“I do not lie.”

Only tiny tidbits of information, nothing substantial. Meanwhile, I’d told him about my grades (which were stellar), my siblings, and my hobbies. When I asked him why he was so curious, he said he wanted to track the inconsistencies of gumiho lies.
