“What’s a gumiho? Who are you? And why—”

I shrieked, ducking under the continuous barrage of jabs he sent my way. “Are you trying to kill me?”

The demon gave me a razor-sharp smile. “I must say, your disguises have become more and more impressive. You’ve got these men absolutely salivating over you. Their bodies are frozen, but they can’t keep their eyes away.”

Shadows coalesced around him, blocking out the warmth of the summer sun with the chill of nightmares instead. He moved forward faster, backing me into a tree, hand jutting out to press me roughly against the bark. Before I could even process what had happened, the cool kiss of his weapon pressed into my neck.

His dark eyes swirled with tendrils of smoke and shadows, light and dark churning into an intense and pointed glare. His dark hair hung forward, highlighting his sharp jaw and angular frame.

At six feet tall, I rarely looked up to men. But right now, I was fixated on a beautiful creature that was taller than my wildest dreams.

The wolves rumbled and growled in warning but were fixed in place. Adam had started to crack, fissures forming along the lines of his body, but only broken shards of him could escape his containment. He stared at me with a pained, vengeful face, chipped away but unable to move.

“Pretty gumiho,” the man purred. “Even my own heart fluttered when I saw this model.”

“GAKSI!” I screamed into my mind. “Help me!”

“Why, though? He’s even more handsome from this angle.”

“GAKSI!”

“Fine, fine. Tell Reaper you’re not a gumiho.”

“I’m not a gumiho,” I whispered.

“Don’t lie to your prince,” Reaper growled. “I can sense your demon energy even stronger up close.”

“That’s just my pet goblin!”

“Do something, Gaksi!”

The blade at my neck burned bluish-white, causing the man to drop it and yank back his hand.

“Quite unceremonious to drop me, Reaper,” Gaksi said aloud, “and even more so to accuse my dear Luna of murder.”

“Gaksi Goblin.” The man—Reaper?—cracked his knuckles and balled his hands into fists. “Why,” he grated out tersely, “have you possessed my sword?”

“I enjoy a good field trip,” Gaksi answered, “and I had nothing better to do. I’ve been immortal far longer than you, boy. I have to take my entertainment wherever I can find it.”

Reaper’s face flicked back to me with a sneer. “Possessing the mortal is entertaining for you?”

“Not as entertaining as watching you fawn over your ‘heart-fluttering’ gumiho, your cursed nine-tailed fox, the most beautiful ripper of hearts you had ever seen—”

“Enough!” Reaper boomed. “What is your relation to this suspect?” He drew his sword back into its scabbard, huffing.

I collected my breath against the tree. This… demon… talked a lot. I always considered demons monsters, not humanoids that could hold conversations.

“What is a gumiho?” I demanded.

“Hehe,” Gaksi chortled in my mind. He jumped back into my head, forcing Reaper to turn around again, only to retrieve his weapon.

“Is this how you’ve been evading capture?” he snarled. “Becoming a goblin’s pet.”

“Pet?” Where did this medieval-looking guy get the nerve? I stood up taller. Pretended I wasn’t out of breath. “I am no one’s pet. And you will release my friends.”

He chuckled darkly. “I will release them when I deal with you.”

“Coward!”
