‘There’s no need to apologise.’ He gently lowered her binoculars.

Touching her necklace, she turned towards him, his lips centimetres from hers. Keeping still, she let him close the gap this time, let him lean towards her. She closed her eyes as she felt the warmth of his lips against hers, his hand gently cupping the back of her neck. It felt right.

Leaning back, Gus grinned. ‘As I said, no need to apologise.’

Heather grinned and placed her hand behind his neck, guiding him back to her. ‘Then they’ll be no need for me to apologise for this either.’ Again, she felt his lips against hers, warm and strong.

Leaning back, Gus grinned. ‘I really do feel the same, you know. I feel I’ve known you for years not a week.’

Chapter Twelve

‘Did you really go and spend the evening in a freezing cold little wooden hut looking for otters?’ Diane wiped the counter.

‘Yes, I did.’ Heather grinned as she closed the lid on a cake box and passed it across the counter to her customer.

Pausing, Diane looked across at her. ‘Say that again.’

‘What? That I did?’ Heather dropped the coins into the till and closed it.

‘Huh. What else did you do?’

‘I watched otters swimming in the river and had hot chocolate from a flask.’ She kept her eyes focused on the door.

‘Umm.’ Holding the cloth in her hand, Diane folded her arms and leaned against the counter, facing Heather. ‘Is that all?’

Meeting Diane’s eyes, Heather laughed and held her hands up, palms forward. ‘Okay, okay. We may have shared a kiss or two.’

‘May have.’ Diane’s mouth twitched at the corners.

‘We did.’ Heather grinned.

‘Aw, I was right! I said to Brooke there was something going on between the two of you.’

‘Really?’

‘Yes, days ago.’

‘I didn’t even know there was anything going on between us until last night.’ Heather shook her head. ‘Was it really that obvious to everyone else?’

Laughing, Diane shrugged. ‘Maybe. So, when are you seeing him again? Have you planned another freezing cold date night?’

Heather grinned and shook her head. ‘He’s going to pop by at lunchtime and then, if my break is at the same time, we’ll go and get lunch.’

‘We’ll just have to make sure your lunchbreak falls at the same time then, won’t we?’

‘Thanks.’

Diane rubbed Heather’s forearm. ‘I’m really pleased for you. Gus seems like one of the good ones.’

Nodding, Heather looked at the floor.

‘What’s the matter?’

‘Nothing.’

‘Yes, there is. What’s up?’

‘This is going to sound really daft.’
