That was her! Someone must have handed in her phone. How did they know her name too though? She must have left her passport too. Looking around, she approached a security guard. ‘Excuse me please. Could you tell me where the Lost and Found desk is please?’

‘It’s at the front of the airport, by Car Hire.’ The security guard pointed to the right.

‘Great. Thank you.’ By Car Hire. If she could find the desk for Car Hire, she’d be able to find the Lost and Found desk and hopefully her mobile. As she followed the directions given, she frowned the queue to Car Hire was huge, it snaked right back almost to the end of the queue for the check-in desks opposite. If the queue for Lost and Found was even half as long, then she’d be waiting hours.

As she rounded the end of the queue for the Car Hire, she stopped in her tracks. It wasn’t. it couldn’t be. ‘Gus? Gus is that really you?’ Jogging towards the desk, she paused. It was.

‘Heather.’ Closing the gap between them, Gus wrapped his arms around her, drawing her close to him.

‘I thought you’d left for the Philippines?’ Hugging him back. She took a deep breath, memorising the spicy earthy aroma of his aftershave.

‘I thought you’d left for Dubai. When I got back to the reserve after changing my mind at the airport, Heidi told me you’d been looking for me, so I went over to the bakery to try to speak to you. That’s when Diane told me your plans.’

‘And you came here.’

‘Yes, I came straight here. After hearing the announcement that check-in was open for your flight, I was scared I was too late. And then I found these.’ He held up her mobile and the heart locket.

‘You found it. Thank you!’ Taking her mobile, Heather tucked it safely into her pocket.

‘And your necklace.’

Heather looked from the necklace Jordan had given her to Gus and back again before taking it form the palm of his hand, walking to the nearest bin and dropping it inside. ‘I dot need that anymore. What about the Philippines?’

‘Well, I still have three weeks to go until I need to be there, but I’ve decided that in the meantime I’m going to apply for some jobs around Durham.’

‘What? Seriously? You can’t do that? You’ve got the chance to travel the world.’

‘I’ve been travelling the world with my job for years, now’s the time to put some roots down. If you’ll have me, that is?’

‘Of course I will.’ Cupping his face with her hands, she kissed him on the lips before pulling away quickly. ‘I’ve just had an idea.’

‘What’s that?’

‘Well, we both love Penworth Bay...’

‘The answer’s yes, let’s move into the bay. There’s a job going at Looe Island, a marine nature reserve. I could apply there.’ Gus grinned.

‘And I can do my job anywhere. It makes perfect sense.’

‘Heather, there’s something I want to talk to you about.’

‘Oh, yes?’ She frowned. She should have known it was too good to be true.

‘Here, come and sit down.’ Holding her hand, Gus led her towards a metal bench by the entrance.

Sitting down, Heather went to touch her necklace before realising it wasn’t there.

‘Do you remember you saying that you were worried because you had been the first one to kiss me and the first one to tell me that you were falling for me?’

‘Yes.’ Where was this going? He had reassured her at the time.

‘Well, it’s my turn for a first today.’

‘Right?’ She shifted on the cold metal bench.

‘I love you, Heather.’

Laughing, she shook her head.
