“Spin, what’s up, man?” the medic greets, and I nod. He grabs his bag and comes toward us while putting on his latex gloves. The other guy roots around in the back of the vehicle, getting the stretcher ready.

“Hey, thanks for coming.”

“Does she have a latex allergy?” he begins as soon as he’s close enough not to yell and continues to pepper questions. “Was she with you? Did she pass out riding?”

Shaking my head, I bite down on my lip, uneasy about the fact that I don’t know how she ended up out here or how long she’s been like this. “Nah, I found her. She was lying in the middle of the road, unconscious. I pulled her to the side and wrapped her in my blanket to try and warm her up.”

“Do you know anything about her? Name, age, where she lives?”

“Nothing. I’ve never seen her before,” I reply bluntly, wishing I did know something about her to share.

“Nothing? You have a penchant for saving women, huh?”

The last woman I helped, I thought she was “the one,” but she wasn’t. Saved her from a shitty situation, but I was too late. She ended up needing to be admitted to a psych ward for an evaluation and never came back out. Life fucked her world up pretty damn good.

“Look, man, the only thing I know is it took you guys ten minutes to get here, and they were probably the longest ten minutes of my fucking life.” I grumble, then wince.Shit.“Sorry for cussing, little baby.” I rub her pregnant belly again, catching a quizzical look from the medic.

Shrugging, I rationalize. “The baby doesn’t need to hear the cussing.”

He lifts his brows in surprise, but then nods, going about checking the woman over. “This your baby?”

“No, I don’t know her,” I repeat, thinking he’s starting to test me. He must not believe this was all a chance encounter.

“Did you check her stomach?”

“No, I didn’t look at her like that. I glanced her over quickly to make sure she wasn’t bleeding and didn’t have any bones sticking out in places, but nothing else.”

“I’d say she’s six months or so. You want to be a daddy?”

I roll my eyes. If I hadn’t met him a couple of times in the past, I might be offended, but he’s good people and is only doing his job. I mean, he must be if he’s saving people every day. I’m simply a random dude in the wrong place at the right time kind of guy, I reckon.

“What were you doing when you found her?” He gently probes around her neck for a beat before instructing, “Carefully hold her head still while I place her in a collar. I don’t think she has a neck injury, but you can never be completely sure.”

Fuck. I hope I didn’t injure her more by hauling her up into my lap to keep her warm.

Doing as he says, I release her once the brace is in place and then help as much as I can to get her on a long flat board. Then I answer his question, “I was on my bike, headed for my shop.”

He continues, making me want to punch him. “And she was just lying there, no movement?”

He running for the sheriff spot or something I don’t know about? Christ.“Nothing. Sprawled out in the middle of the road.”

Both guys get the straps in position over her body, then lift and place her on a stretcher. “She’s cold. She’ll need blankets,” I mutter, covering her in mine again and tucking it around her legs to keep the warmth in.

“You did good, man. Thanks for staying with her and calling us.”

“Of course. Do you know what’s wrong with her?”

“Not yet, but we’ll get an IV in her and go from there. Poor woman. She’s got a few bumps on her, but I’m thinking they’re from her fall.”

“You believe she tripped?”

He shakes his head. “No, I think she passed out cold and got banged up a bit when she hit the ground. She should wake up soon with fluids and rest.”

“How can you tell?” I watch as they load her into the back of the ambulance, wishing I could ride with her.

“When you’ve been at this as long as we have, you get a sense about these things and what will happen.”

“All right. Which hospital are you headed to? I’ll follow.”
