I stepped into the room and plopped on the chair next to the desk. “Uh, no. He’s working.” I mean, I’m sure Charlie was working, so it wasn’t really a lie.

“Maybe next time.” She sat at the computer and ran through a bunch of questions. She took my blood pressure and then logged out of the computer. She grabbed a paper gown from a drawer and laid it on the exam table. “Undress from the waist down, and I’ll go tell the doctor you’re ready. She’ll be in shortly.”

I nodded and took a deep breath.

This was all still surreal to me.

I was nine weeks pregnant.

I was growing a baby inside of me.

Right. Now.

I tipped my head back and closed my eyes. “Sweet crapola.”

I quickly kicked off my shoes and pulled down my pants and underwear. I folded them neatly and placed them on the chair I had been sitting in. I stepped back, but snatched my folded underwear off the top and shoved them under my pants.

The doctor was about to see my downstairs girly bits, but god forbid she saw my underwear.

Totally made sense.

I hopped up on the table, trying to keep the gown closed in the back, and the door swung open.

“Knock, knock,” Dr. McGee called.

I struggled to keep the gown shut and almost flopped right off the table.

“Whoa there,” Dr. McGee laughed. She laid a steady hand on my arm and smiled at me. “Doing okay?”

No.

Not at all.

“Uh, am I supposed to answer that truthfully?” I whispered.

She tipped her head to the side and eyed me closely. “Yes.”

“Have you ever heard of the town Adams?” I asked.

She quirked her eyebrow. “Yes.”

“Do you know anyone who lives there?”

She chuckled. “Well, not that I know.”

“Chicken Biscuit?”

“You’ve lost me, Missy,” she confessed.

It all came out.

All. Of. It.

Fifteen minutes later, Dr. McGee knew my whole story, and she just stared at me.

“So, that’s my answer to if I’m okay,” I finished.

She cleared her throat.
