Bandit dropped the bone in his mouth and let out a woof.

“Right?” I agreed. “It’s just you and me today for my day off, Bandit.” I patted the couch next to me, and he hopped up. “And what do you want to do today?” I asked him.

He sat facing me and rested his paw on my arm.

“Go to the dog park?” I asked.

He let out a woof.

“Maybe get a pup cup from the ice cream place?”

Bandit stood and leaned into me. He licked my face and panted happily.

“And then maybe we can take a drive to the lake for an evening swim?” I suggested.

Bandit threw his head back and let out a long howl.

Swimming was his all-time favorite thing.

“All right, all right,” I laughed. “Let me get my butt off this couch, and then we’ll get our day going, okay?”

Bandit jumped off the couch and turned happy circles on the floor.

Bandit couldn’t talk to me, but I could tell what he was trying to say to me and what he was feeling.

He was the best blue merle Australian Shepard in the world. I honestly don’t know how I would have survived the past couple of months without him.

When Charlie broke things off with me, I have been upset, but then when I find out I was pregnant, I almost lost my mind.

Only I would hook up with a guy for years, and when he breaks up with me, I would end up pregnant.

Stellar.

And as of right now, I had zero plans of telling anyone that I was pregnant. I was one breakdown away from packing my bags, grabbing Bandit, and getting the heck out of Adams to start a new life in Wasilla, Alaska. Far, far away from Charlie and Adams.

Bandit would love the snow, and I would more than be good with being surrounded by mountains and not a single person I knew as I raised my little baby.

But then I would think about Shelby and know she would hunt me down like a dog on a bone to drag me back to Adams.

So, for now, I was going to stay in Adams, and when I started actually to show, my butt would very likely be on a plane to Alaska.

Today, well, today, I was going to spend my day with Bandit and not think about Charlie Beck.

God knew he wasn’t thinking about me, either.

Chapter Two

Charlie

“Do you really think we needed three bounce houses and a face painter?”

Wilder shrugged. “I mean, I don’t think they are hurting anything, right? If anything, they are drawing in families looking for something to do in Adams.” Wilder nodded behind me. “I mean hell, even Shelby is getting in line for the face painter.”

I turned and shielded my eyes from the sun with my hand. “Don’t you think she could have waited until there was a lull?”

Wilder chuckled. “I don’t think a lull is going to happen today, Charlie.” He stepped next to me and clapped me on my shoulder. “Today is the start of something amazing for Chicken Biscuit, Charlie.”

I looked around and had to agree that I had never seen a crowd gathered out front and inside Chicken Biscuit like there was today. I just didn’t know how this was going to last. Wilder was helping to launch the restaurant into the present day to keep Chicken King at bay, but I couldn’t help but wonder if the bottom was going to fall out.
