I was pretty sure I had gained at least fifty pounds overnight.

Charlie had asked me out three days ago, and in that time, it seemed Nugget was pushing out further and further to make sure Daddy saw them.

It might have also been the two dozen biscuits I had eaten, though.

My cravings had expanded past brown sugar raisin scones from the café to Chicken Biscuit biscuits and pistachio ice cream. Well, any ice cream would do in a pinch, but pistachio seemed to really hit the spot.

“There will be no sweeping of the feet tonight,” I called. “I’m in it for the free meal and dessert.”

Silence.

Well, maybe Shelby finally got the drift. She wasn’t coming in.

I laid my head back and sighed. “It’s so peaceful, right, Bandit?”

“Yes, yes, thank you so much, Mrs. Daniels. You know how Missy is. She is always misplacing her keys,” I heard Shelby call.

Wait. Mrs. Daniels?

She wouldn’t.

I scrambled to get up and waddled over to the door.

“Yes, you have a good night, too!” My door swung open, and Shelby stood there waving to the left. She turned to me and held up the spare key I left with Mrs. Daniels.

“How dare you?” I hissed. “That is my spare key.” I snatched it from her and shoved it in my pocket.

She stepped around me into my apartment. “Hello to you, too,” she called.

I slammed the door shut and folded my arms over my chest. I looked down at my feet and realized my bump was very noticeable. I dropped my arms and tugged my shirt down.

Shit, shit.

How had I forgotten about the spare key Mrs. Daniels had?

When Shelby had started knocking, I should have at least thrown on a sweater in case she was able to get in.

My pregnant brain was working against me.

“At least Bandit is happy to see me,” she laughed. Bandit was standing on his hind legs with her front paws resting on Shelby’s thigh. “He loves me.”

I rolled my eyes. “He loves everyone who pets him and is also a traitor,” I grumbled.

Bandit ignored me and preened to get more pets and love from Shelby.

“Why is your mama in a mood?” she asked Bandit. “Is it her time of the month?” she asked.

I scoffed and walked into the kitchen. Shelby couldn’t have been further from the truth. “I already know what I am wearing tonight, Shelby, and I’m not getting all dolled up.” I grabbed a cold biscuit from the fridge and a bottle of soda. “Your assistance is not warranted and needed tonight.”

She rolled her eyes and pushed Bandit down. “Let me talk to your mama for a second, Bandit. She needs some sense knocked into her.”

I moved back over to the couch, but she caught my hand. She pulled the biscuit from my hand and tossed it to Bandit.

“That was my last one,” I cried. How dare she toss away my biscuit as if they weren’t my lifeline right now.

“We both know the two guys who own the place, Missy. We can get you more,” she muttered. “I love the biscuits, too, but I’m not going to cry over them.”

I sniffled and wiped my nose with the back of my hand. “I’m not crying,” I mumbled.
