“Thank you,” Missy whispered.

What?

WHAT?

Missy was pregnant?

We hadn’t been together for months.

“Are you...”

Missy looked around frantically. “Uh, yeah.”

My eyes dropped to her stomach, but the table was in the way.

“Is it...” I couldn’t get the words out. There was a damn good possibility that the baby wasn’t mine since we had broken up three months ago. She didn’t even look pregnant.

Holy shit.

“I need to go to the bathroom, Charlie,” she whispered. “I need a second.” Her eyes were filled with tears, and her bottom lip trembled. She scrambled to get out of the booth and headed toward the bathroom.

“Missy,” I called weakly. I didn’t know what to think or do.

I had been at an all-time high hearing Missy tell me she wanted everything I had to offer, and now I was somewhere on the floor trying to come to grips with Missy being pregnant.

Holy shit balls.

It had to be mine.

She wouldn’t have been sitting in front of me if she was pregnant with someone else’s baby, right?

But we hadn’t been together for the past three months. Maybe she had found someone else, and things happened.

My mind raced with all the good and bad possibilities.

Possibilities I never got to discuss with Missy because five minutes later, our food arrived, but Missy never came back from the bathroom.

She had left.

Chapter Fifteen

Missy

“Hello?”

“Dr. McGee?” I cried.

“Missy?” she gasped.

“He knows,” I wailed.

“Oh, dear. Give me one second, Missy.” Muffled voices sounded, and a door slammed. “I’m here.”

“Macon blurted out that I was pregnant, and Charlie knows. He knows, and I don’t know what I’m going to do, Dr. McGee.”

“Calm down, calm down,” she called. “And I’m going to need you to call me Shannon.”

“Shannon,” I cried, “he knows!”
