“When did that happen?” Shannon asked.

“Uh, I think three or four days ago? I was in the drive-thru of Chicken Biscuit trying to fix my craving, and he was there.” I closed my eyes. “I went in the drive-thru because I figured I was less likely to see him. I was wrong. I tried to pay him for my food, and he said he couldn’t accept my money. I told him I owed him then; he asked me out. How could I say no?” I wailed.

“Okay, everything sounds really good so far, Missy.”

“I met him at the diner tonight. It was kind of awkward at first, but then we just jumped right into everything. He thinks he doesn’t have enough to offer me and that I deserve better.”

“Do you think that?” Shannon asked.

“What? No! I loved dating Charlie before. We just had fun, and it didn’t matter what or where we were. Why does everyone think I’m shallow and self-centered? I don’t need adventure, excitement, and diamonds. I just want Charlie.”

“Did you tell him that?” Shannon asked.

“Well, duh. I’m sick of beating around the bush. I told him straight out that I want him and everything that comes with him.”

“Oh my,” Shannon whispered.

It had been a big moment, and then Macon had messed it all up. “I was two syllables from telling Charlie I loved him, and then Macon barged in like a boat with a banana.”

“Have you been drinking?” Shannon asked. “I know I told you a glass of wine here and there won’t hurt the baby, but...”

“I’m not drinking,” I cried. “I smash two idioms together, Shannon. They’re called malaphors. The name clicks a bell. Rings a bell, and something clicks into place. See? Do I need to explain it more?”

“Uh, no,” Shannon laughed. “I get it. Back to Charlie.”

“So, Macon leaves after dropping the bombshell about Nugget, and we’re both speechless. Charlie manages to ask me if I’m actually pregnant, and I say yes. I can’t really keep the lie going, can I?”

“And then you left?” she guessed.

“Bingo,” I called. “Hit the nail right on the nose. I was out of there like a flash.”

“You need to go back, Missy. You didn’t give him a chance to react.”

“He was shocked, Shannon. That is a reaction.”

“Missy,” she laughed. “I can guarantee his reaction was the right one. You guys haven’t been together for three months, and now you’re pregnant. Heck, with the way you ran, he could be thinking that the baby isn’t even his.”

“What?” I gasped. “Of course, Nugget is Charlie’s.”

“How is he supposed to know that, Missy? He just knows you are pregnant.”

Oh, hell. “I haven’t been with anyone but Charlie for years. I love the man. How could he think I was having someone else’s baby?”

“Because you guys broke up, and you’ve been avoiding him like the plague.”

“Because I’m pregnant with his baby,” I yelled.

“But he doesn’t know that,” she pointed out.

“God dammit, Shannon,” I sighed.

“Drive your butt home, and go talk to him, Missy. He has the bare minimum information right now, and you owe it to him to tell him everything.”

“Do I have to?” I whispered.

“Yes, those are strict orders from your doctor.”

“But you told me to call you Shannon,” I insisted. “We’re friends now.”
