Marcus looked around. “One, no one else is checking out. Two, you’re the only cashier I see.”

“My coworker had to use the bathroom.”

The guy was being a real prick, and Marcus was not in the mood to deal with him. His nerves were already frayed, and being chastised by a pimply-faced teenager was making him grind his teeth.

Normally, Marcus followed the rules. But like he’d pointed out, douchebag was the only cashier for now.

“Can’t you just ring us up?” Beast asked politely.

“This is an express lane,” the guy said with attitude.

“Don’t you talk to him that way,” Marcus snapped. “Consider yourself lucky he’s being nice. He could eat you, you know.”

“Shut it,” Beast whispered.

“We’re not taking everything off the belt.” Marcus crossed his arms. “Ring us up, or get your potty-break partner to do it. I don’t care.”

Beast gripped Marcus’s upper arm and pulled him toward the large front window of the store. “What’s your problem? He’s just doing his job.”

“But I’m right,” Marcus argued. “No one else is in line, and he’s the only cashier. Why can’t he just quickly take care of us? I don’t see the problem.” Marcus took a deep breath. “Fine, we’ll put our things back into our cart and wait for the other cashier.”

Beast walked back over to the cashier. “Ring us out, or I’ll follow you home and make your life a living hell.”

Marcus’s brows shot up. So much for being nice. He wouldn’t have gone to that extreme, but it was clear they were both on edge.

The cashier’s hands moved lightning fast as he rang up their purchases. Marcus took a twenty out of his wallet and handed it over after Beast had paid the bill.

“What’s this for?” the teenager asked.

“For putting up with my craziness.” Marcus smiled. “You have a fabulous day.”

Beast shoved another twenty into the guy’s hand. “I wouldn’t have followed you home. Sorry about threatening you.”

As they walked out, Marcus chuckled. “I think you’re getting better at dealing with humans.”

Beast grunted in response, not wanting to admit that Marcus might be right.

As they loaded the bags into the trunk, Beast couldn’t help but notice the way Marcus’s jeans hugged his ass just right. He quickly shook the thought out of his head, feeling slightly guilty for even considering such a thing.

“What’s wrong?” Marcus asked, raising a blond eyebrow.

“Nothing,” Beast said, averting his gaze. “Just glad we got what we needed.”

Marcus nodded, a small smile playing at the corners of his lips. “Yeah. Now I can fill up on junk food, and you can do whatever it is you do.”

Beast couldn’t help but feel a small semblance of affection toward the human. Maybe Marcus wasn’t so bad after all.

* * * *

Beast’s stomach growled when he smelled the aroma coming from the kitchen. Whatever Marcus was cooking was making him drool.

“Beast.”

“Huh?” He forced his focus back to his phone call. “What did you say?”

Talon chuckled. “I see that human’s got you all fucked up in the head.”

“Not in this lifetime,” Beast replied. “Are you going to tell me if you found anything or muse about my personal life?”
