“I don’t party.” Lance frowned. “Why do you want to know about my week?”

“Any holes in your memory?” Marcus asked. “A time period when you don’t remember what you did?”

“You think I’m on drugs?” Lance looked offended. “The most dangerous thing I’ve done is add a shot of espresso to my coffee. Gets me all hyped up, but I also get my entire apartment clean.”

Marcus gave Beast a look that said he highly doubted Lance was under some kind of hypnosis. “So what did you do when Mr. Blight unlocked his office door?” Marcus asked.

Lance bit his lower lip. “I followed him.”

“But you suck at following people,” Beast said before he could stop himself. “I spotted you right away.”

“That’s because I really didn’t want to follow Marcus.” Lance pulled at his shirt collar. “I kept my distance from Mr. Blight, like I’ve seen in the movies.”

Lord help them all. Beast couldn’t believe Lance had pretended this was some kind of spy movie. “Did you get caught?”

“No.” Lance gave a small smile, like he was proud of himself. “I followed him a few blocks, where he parked in an underground garage. I ducked down so he wouldn’t see me then saw him meet with some guy dressed in a very impressive suit. The kind high-powered attorneys wear.”

“Was it dark outside?” Beast asked. If it was, Mr. Blight could have been meeting with a vampire. Maybe he was the one beguiled or paid to do their bidding. But if Mr. Blight was rich, like Marcus indicated, he wouldn’t need the money. Maybe the vampire had promised him something else.

Lance nodded. “It was dark out. I couldn’t hear what they were saying, but I could tell the conversation was getting heated. Mr. Blight’s face was red, and he was flexing his jaw. The other guy, the one I don’t know, didn’t look impressed. He kept his composure. They talked for a few more minutes, and then Mr. Blight left. I couldn’t follow him after that, because the stranger lingered.

“A few minutes later, more men showed up, and the stranger spoke to them. Again, I couldn’t hear what was being said, but after I was finally able to leave, I started being followed. I stopped at a donut shop and noticed someone paying too much attention to me. I spotted the same guy at the gas station sitting in his car. When I pulled up to my building, he parked a few spaces behind me.”

“And you have no memory lapses?” Marcus asked.

“Why do you keep asking me that?” Lance curled his lips in when the waitress approached their table to take his order. When she walked away, Lance continued. “I remember every second of my time.”

Beast leaned forward, his eyes locked onto Lance’s. “You need to be careful, Lance. It’s possible that you’re in danger.”

“I know. That’s why I reached out to Marcus. I don’t know who else to turn to,” Lance said, desperation lacing his voice. “I don’t know what’s going on, but I don’t want to end up dead.”

Beast could see the fear in Lance’s eyes and knew he couldn’t just dismiss him. God, Marcus was definitely getting under his skin, because now Beast wanted to help this human. He was used to helping them when he was hunting, but he did it anonymously. Even so, the little kitten looked terrified.

“I’ll call Cable. Maybe he’ll keep an eye on Lance,” Beast said.

“I don’t know who Cable is, but any help would be appreciated.” Lance looked relieved. “I thought for sure my body would turn up in some stinky alley. I even imagined my obituary, which wasn’t flattering.”

The guy was definitely an odd duck.

Cable and Logan got out of the car where they’d parked at the curb. They were on the lower east side of the city, where nothing good ever happened. Vagrants, hookers, and low-income housing were all around them.

Cable looked up at the apartments over a dry cleaner. “Are you sure we have the right place?”

His twin nodded. “This was the address Rayne gave us.”

Cable wasn’t sure how their alpha had tracked down the person who’d recorded Beast killing a vampire in an alley, but if Rayne said this was the place, Cable was going to find the culprit.

He followed Logan up a set of narrow stairs to the top, where there were only two doors across from each other. Instead of knocking, they listened for a long moment.

Cable heard faint murmurs coming from behind the door on the right. He motioned to Logan, who nodded, indicating he had heard it too. Cable drew a deep breath and knocked on the door loudly.

The murmurs quieted immediately at the sound of their knock. After a few long seconds, the door opened, and a man in his late thirties stood before them. Thick black hair, piercing blue eyes, and a five o’clock shadow gave him a handsome rough look.

“Yeah?”

“Good evening,” Cable said politely, not wanting to startle the guy. “We’re looking for information.”
