“I take it you want me to babysit Lance?” he asked Beast.

“You’d be doing me a favor,” Marcus said. “Lance is my friend, and I don’t want to see him hurt.”

Cable didn’t know Marcus personally, but he had heard about the guy through the others. Boy, was Beast in for a ride. “Do you want me to simply watch him or find out who the guy following him is?”

Logan was going to have to return to Poncho’s without him. But Cable didn’t want his twin going alone. He’d ask one of the other pack members to help them out with the situation.

“Both, if you can,” Beast said. “I’ve already got enough to do already.”

“Nelo’s covered,” Cable reminded him. “Talon’s on that.”

Lance sucked in a sharp breath. “I heard Mr. Blight mention someone named Nelo once.”

Beast and Cable cursed while Marcus looked slack-jawed.

“What?” Lance looked between them. “Is that bad?”

“The worst,” Marcus said. “You definitely need protection if Nelo is involved in this.”

Cable couldn’t have agreed more.

Chapter Eight

Beast wasn’t surprised Nelo was somehow involved in this. Vampires were cutthroat, especially one who’d just taken over a coven. After he and Marcus left the diner, Beast called Rayne.

“Nelo is somehow involved.” He told his alpha about what Lance said. “I’m telling you my gut says there isn’t a new threat in town. You know as well as I do that Eleazar is just using us to do his dirty work.”

“I’m getting the same impression,” Rayne said. “I haven’t heard a single word about any new threat, either.”

“So what now?”

“Talon keeps tailing Nelo,” Rayne said.

“I can’t keep sitting on my ass,” Beast growled. “It’s driving me crazy.”

When Rayne spoke, there was humor in his voice. “From what I hear, you have other issues. Why didn’t you tell me Marcus was your mate?”

How in the fuck had Rayne found out? Then Beast thought about it. He hadn’t hidden the mating mark on his hand while in the diner. What had the twins done, texted Rayne the second Beast got up from the table?

“That was fast.”

“You know how a pack is,” Rayne said with a chuckle. “Congrats.”

“I’m still not sitting on my ass,” Beast said as Marcus clicked his seat belt in place. “Give me something, Rayne.”

“Are you willing to leave your mate alone while you do surveillance on Nelo?”

Beast looked at Marcus, who was glancing down at his phone. “No, he’ll come with me.”

“I’d try to talk you out of this, but I know you, Beast.” Rayne sighed. “I’ll pull Talon off of Nelo and put him back on the street to hunt. I hope you know what you’re doing.”

Beast hoped the same thing. He wasn’t used to working with a human, let alone his mate, but he wanted to get to the bottom of all this. “I’ll find Nelo tonight and see what he’s up to,” Beast said.

“Keep me abreast of what’s going on,” Rayne said. “You’ll have your mate with you, and his safety comes before your surveillance.”

“Our surveillance,” Beast corrected. He would have told Rayne to have a talk with Eleazar about using them for his own personal whatever, but he knew better than to tell his alpha what to do.

“Just be careful, and no more alley killings,” Rayne said. “At least make sure it’s not being recorded.”
