“Give me your location.”

Chapter Three

Beast cursed the entire ride to pick up Marcus. He should have checked his surroundings last night. In this day and age, a lot of things were recorded. He’d been a fool to assume they were alone in that alley, and now his stupidity was going to bite him in the ass.

When Rayne found out… Beast didn’t want to think what his alpha would do. Shit. He should have stuck to his stakeout, but there was no way he could have let Marcus handle last night on his own. If Beast hadn’t shown up, Marcus would be dead.

He pulled up to the curb to find Marcus pacing.

“I need to find a tech savvy guy,” Marcus said when he climbed into the car. “I spilled coffee on my boss’s phone, but if he has a cloud, we need to remove that video, permanently.”

“We need to talk to Rayne. He might know someone.” Beast pulled off, heading back home. “Are you sure your boss’s phone is ruined?”

Marcus snorted. “It looked like a really old model. I don’t think he embraces technology the way the way the rest of the world does.”

Beast hoped that was true. He didn’t need humans having verifiable proof of their existence. That would be really bad. Preternatural couldn’t afford to be exposed. The world would plunge into chaos if humans knew the truth. “We also need to find out who sent that video.”

“We?” Marcus frowned. “There is no we. This is snowballing, and I can’t be a part of it.”

“I hate to tell you this, but you’re already a part of it,” Beast said. “Pull up your big boy pants and deal with this.”

“Why?” Marcus asked. “The video thing is for you guys to handle. I don’t know how to do that. My part is over.”

Beast ground his teeth. “What happened to you being able to handle yourself? Where’s the guy who stood up to someone twice his size?”

“Buddy, that bravery died when I was nearly killed last night.” Marcus snorted. “But okay, okay. How can I be of service? I don’t know shit about breaking into the cloud, so what can I do besides get in the way?”

“You could stow the sarcasm,” Beast replied.

“I’m a nervous wreck right now. Sarcasm is my go-to when I’m freaking out.” Marcus turned toward him. “You killing Max was recorded. That’s not something you want getting out. What we need to figure out is who did this and why he sent it to my boss. What on earth could he gain from getting me fired?”

Beast glanced in his rearview mirror and saw the same dark blue sedan turning every corner that he had. They were being followed. “We got a tail.”

“What?” Marcus started to turn around.

“Don’t look. Jeez. Are you trying to give away the fact that we know?”

“Sorry, but I’ve never been tailed before,” Marcus snapped. “Who is it?”

“How in the fuck should I know?” Beast made a few more turns, and sure enough, the sedan stayed on them. He kept to the speed limit, stopping at lights, but the person driving never made a move to either cut them off or do something more sinister.

It was mid-morning, and there were plenty of vehicles on the street. “We can lose them in traffic.”

Marcus frowned. “The only thing I’ve ever lost in traffic is my patience.”

“Grab the gun from my glovebox.”

“Are you kidding me?” Marcus looked wide-eyed at him. “I’ve never handled a gun in my life! What do you want me to do, lean out the window and shoot at whoever it is? What if this is just a coincidence? We’re both paranoid right now.”

“It’s not a coincidence.” Beast was sure of it. “I’ve made four turns since spotting our tail, and we haven’t shaken the person yet.”

“Fuck,” Marcus murmured as he retrieved the gun. “I don’t even know how to use this.”

“Aim and shoot,” Beast said.

“Now?”

“No. If things get crazy, then do it.” Beast didn’t like making Marcus use a weapon, but if they really were in danger and needed a way out, maybe being fired at would slow their tail down.
