“I’m glad you think I’m some kind of hero in a cape,” Cable said. “You’d be the first.”

“Not true.” Sam shook his head. “If you do this regularly, I’m pretty sure there are people out there just as grateful for the save as I am.”

God, Sam was going to make him blush. Something he hadn’t done in forever.

Cable smiled. “I don’t know about that, but I appreciate the sentiment.”

He couldn’t help but feel a wave of guilt wash over him. In truth, he didn’t feel like a hero. He was a wolf shifter that had killed countless vampires. But seeing Sam’s adoration made him feel like maybe there was some good left in him.

Cable cleared his throat. “Well, I don’t do it for the recognition,” he said, trying not to let his voice betray his emotions. “I do it because there are men and women out there who can’t do it for themselves.”

Sam rested his chin in his fists, his elbows resting on the table. “Well, whatever the reason, it’s better than my mundane life. I go to work and come home, occasionally stopping at my favorite coffee shop for my fix.”

If only Cable’s life was that simple. It never had been, not even in his childhood, so he envied Sam’s simplicity. “What about your parents?”

Bright tears filled Sam’s eyes, though they didn’t fall. “My father was a cop and died in the line of duty when I was just a baby, and my mom passed away two years ago. She’d been a school teacher and loved her job, but the cancer won.”

“I’m sorry to hear that.” Cable reached across the table, and Sam gave him his hand. “Why don’t we change the subject to something a bit brighter?”

Cable could only imagine having loving parents. Even if Sam had lost them, that was a hell of a lot better than his dark childhood that he didn’t want to share.

Sam grinned. “So are you looking to get lucky tonight?”

Cable once again nearly choked on a laugh. “Talk about a one-eighty.”

“I’m hoping to get lucky.” Sam shrugged. “We’re adults, so we should be able to talk about this.”

The guy was full of surprises. On the outside, Sam looked all innocent, but Cable now saw that there was a wild side to the human. He liked blunt, and Sam knew how to cut to the chase. That was refreshing.

Cable leaned back in his chair, enjoying the view of the city, though he was enjoying the view of Sam even more. “You know, Sam, I don’t usually do this kind of thing. Going out to dinner with a guy, that is.”

Sam raised an eyebrow. “Is that so? Well, I’m glad I could be the one to change that.”

Cable couldn’t help but chuckle. This human was a breath of fresh air, and he was enjoying every moment with him. “I have to admit, you surprised me tonight.”

Sam grinned. “Oh, really? How so?”

“You’re not what I expected,” Cable said honestly.

Sam’s smile faltered for a brief moment. “I take it that’s not a good thing.”

“No, it is,” Cable said. “Everything about you intrigues me. That’s why I hunted you down at your job and why I asked you out on a date. I’d really like to get to know you better.”

“You would?” Sam frowned as if that was a foreign concept to him. “Most guys only want one thing from me, and when they get it, I don’t hear from them again. No one has ever wanted to get to know me better.”

“Those pussies were idiots,” Cable growled low in his throat. “They had no idea what they had, and their loss is my gain.”

“I like how blunt you are,” Sam replied with an adorable blush that made Cable want to devour the guy. “Most of the time I’m wondering what a guy is thinking, but you just spell it out.”

“All you have to do is ask,” Cable said.

Their dinner arrived, and Cable had to admit he couldn’t remember having such a good time. They laughed and talked, shared their dinner with each other, and by the time he paid the check, Cable wasn’t sure what emotions were squeezing his chest. All he knew was that he had to see Sam again.

They drove back to Sam’s apartment, and Cable prayed no one messed with the Mustang. Rayne would kill him if someone stole it or stripped it for parts. Maybe he’d send a text to one of his pack members to come get it and Cable would take an Uber home in the morning.

Because he definitely planned on staying the night.

After Sam unlocked his door, they headed inside.
