“What?” Logan asked. “I didn’t say anything out of line. Your mate is just wasted.”

“I’m not wasted,” Sam argued. “Wait, there really are two of you?”

“Twins,” Cable said, less than pleased that Sam had made googly eyes at Logan.

In their youth it was hilarious for them to switch places. Especially in school. Cable sucked at science, and Logan excelled at the subject. So when it came time to take a test, Logan always took them for him. Whereas Cable took Logan’s advanced math tests.

He would even admit that a time or two they’d switched places on dates. Not something Cable was proud of now, but his only excuse was that he’d been young and dumb. The worst part of their youth? When they’d shot up and out, towering over their father, and their dad had tried to beat them. As far as he knew, no one had found the body yet.

Would Cable have handled the situation with his father differently now that he was older and wiser? He wasn’t sure, and maybe he would never know.

“Which one of you is my mate?” Sam narrowed his eyes and slapped his hands onto his hips. “This isn’t funny, and I don’t appreciate you two playing this game.”

“I didn’t play any games,” Cable defended, glaring at his brother. “Stop getting me into trouble with Sam.”

That was when Cable noticed the other mates watching them.

“Swear, I wasn’t playing games with my mate,” he said.

“No, you were just spying on the lot of them,” Logan said with a smirk. “Have fun with this mess.”

Slack-jawed, Cable watched as Logan walked away.

“I think I need to lie down,” Sam groaned. “I’m not a drinker, and that wine is going to my head.”

“Next time just join us instead of eavesdropping,” Felix said. “So rude.”

“I hope Sam kicks your ass for this,” Marcus said with a deep scowl.

“Help Sam to bed,” Brooklyn said as he glared at Cable. “He looks like he’s going to be sick.”

Elliot simply stood there with narrowed eyes.

Cable didn’t like being in the doghouse with his mate, let alone the rest of the shrimps. His pack might be badass wolves, but none of them were going to argue that the mates were the ones who really ran things around here.

“Sorry,” Cable muttered as he helped Sam to their bedroom. When he closed the bedroom door behind him, he looked at Sam. “I leave you alone for an hour and you make allies and get drunk.”

“Oh, my head,” Sam groaned. “Maybe I should have eaten first.”

Cable shook his head as he helped Sam out of his clothes and tucked him into bed. The guy had managed to make friends and get drunk in the few minutes they’d been apart. He couldn’t help but wonder what else Sam was capable of.

This was the reason he needed to end Brazen. Cable would do anything to protect Sam and keep him safe and innocent.

As Sam drifted off to sleep, Cable knew tracking the vampire down was risky, but he was sick and tired of everyone being in danger. He’d have to talk to Rayne about it, and that was a conversation he wasn’t looking forward to.

Cable slipped out of the room and made his way to the kitchen, where he found Rayne sitting at the table, the others nowhere in sight. It seemed they’d taken their wine to another part of the house.

“Can I talk to you for a minute?” Cable sat across from Rayne at the table.

“What’s up?” Rayne had a bowl of spaghetti in front of him. It smelled delicious, but Cable wasn’t hungry at the moment.

Cable took a deep breath before speaking. “I want to hunt for Brazen.”

Rayne sat back, studying Cable. “How many more times will his men get the drop on you before you’re actually killed?”

It was a legit question, but Cable still ground his teeth. He didn’t like being reminded how those fucking vampires had used him as a guinea pig. How he’d been blindsided twice. “Then what are we going to do, continue to let them kidnap and drug us?”

Rayne sighed heavily, running a hand through his hair. “I understand where you’re coming from, but if this goes wrong, we could all be in danger.”
