Logan wished someone would try that bullshit with him. He’d feed them their own entrails. “You got it.”

As soon as Logan walked out of his office, Rayne picked up his phone and dialed Eleazar. They hadn’t spoken since their meeting in that warehouse, and even now Rayne hated that he had to even make this call. He’d only known that Eleazar hadn’t been able to locate Nelo from word on the street.

But drugs? This was far more serious than Rayne anticipated when Nelo had taken over.

“I really hate that you have my phone number now,” Eleazar said when he picked up.

“I really hate that I have to use it,” Rayne snarled. He was just glad Eleazar was over his hurt feelings about Rayne mating Felix. Not that they spoke about it, but at least Eleazar answered his calls. They never talked about Felix, and Rayne preferred to keep it that way.

“What is it that you need?” Eleazar asked. “I have more important things to attend to, like pulling my teeth out.”

“One of my men was drugged by one of Nelo’s men,” Rayne said. “Is this a thing now? Have vampires resorted to drugging shifters?”

Eleazar was quiet for so long that Rayne thought he’d hung up. “Interesting,” Eleazar finally said. “I wish I’d thought of that. Maybe I could have gotten rid of you mongrels long before now.”

“Try it and I’ll burn your fucking estate down while you sleep.” Which Rayne should have done a long time ago. Unfortunately, the two of them had an unspoken rule. Don’t burn down Eleazar’s home while he slept and his men didn’t come after Rayne’s pack.

They only hunted those who harmed humans. Or so Rayne said. He and his pack had killed many vampires in their quest for domination. They operated in a very gray area. The fight between wolves and vampires was centuries old, maybe even longer than that, and he had to do whatever it took to ensure that his kind would always come out on top.

Being a hunter wasn’t always about protecting the innocent, but as long as Eleazar was clueless to that fact, they had an uneasy alliance.

“I’ve not heard of vampires using drugs to subdue shifters,” Eleazar said. “Not my men, at least. Since Nelo operates on his own agenda, I have no idea if he has implemented this plan or if that was a fluke.”

“Have you heard from Nelo?”

“Not since you two fought,” Eleazar answered.

Rayne gnashed his teeth. He hoped Logan had better luck finding out. If Nelo’s coven was resorting to drugs, they’d just changed everything.

He hung up without saying goodbye and sat back in his chair. Ever since he’d mated Felix, Rayne hadn’t been out on the street much. Maybe it was time he went back to hunting. With only seven in their pack, he could do more. Ridgeway was a large city, needing all the help it could get.

The next morning Cable felt a lot better. Whatever he’d been given must have run its course, because he was up, showered, and heading toward the front door. Not only was he going to track Samuel down, but later tonight, he was going to find the vampire who’d drugged him.

“Whoa,” Rayne said when he stepped out of his office. “Since you’ve been asleep, you don’t know that we’re teaming up.”

“Teaming up?” Cable frowned. “For what?”

“Since you were drugged, I don’t want any of us going out alone.”

“But it’s broad daylight out.” Cable wasn’t taking anyone with him to find Samuel. Tracking the human down was no one’s business but his own.

Rayne raised his eyebrow. “Do you really think that vampires can’t operate during the day? Don’t be naïve, Cable. They have pawns willing or beguiled to do their bidding. We need to be careful and work together until we find out who’s behind all of this. We don’t want any more of our pack getting hurt.”

Cable scoffed. “Do you really think a human can get the drop on me?”

That was laughable. The day a human could overpower Cable was the day he handed over his balls.

“You’re gonna shake whoever I send with you, aren’t you?”

Cable grinned. “You know me too well.”

“I would think, after last night, you’d comply, but I forgot who I was talking to.” Rayne sighed. “Come full dark, you’re getting a buddy.”

“Come full dark, I’ll welcome the company.” Cable headed out before his alpha changed his mind and demanded that Cable take someone with him. He was shocked Rayne had relented in the first place. His alpha wasn’t known for backing down, but Cable wasn’t going to look a gift horse in the mouth.
