“You wish you were that good at guessing my moves.” Cable dabbed on a little cologne, just enough to smell good without being overwhelming.

“You just got home twenty minutes ago and ready to go. What else could it be?” Logan grinned. “Plus, I saw the way you looked at that human last night when you pulled that vampire off of him and helped him escape. There was definite lust in your eyes.”

“And there was crap in yours if you read that much into me doing my job.” Cable wasn’t sure why he didn’t tell Logan the truth, except for the fact he loved giving him a hard time. It had been that way since they were pups and their dad had been an evil bastard who’d loved to beat on them.

Cable and Logan had had no choice but to band together to survive their childhood. Their mother had died giving birth to them, and their old man had blamed them for her death. Sure, twins were famous for sharing a deeper bond than regular siblings, but theirs was forged in fire. Unbreakable and unyielding.

“Fine, keep it to yourself.” His smile faded. “Be back before full dark. If you can’t, call me. I don’t want you drugged again, Cable. I lost my mind trying to find you.”

Although Cable had been worried about himself at the time, he couldn’t imagine what Logan had gone through trying to find him. “Head on a swivel.”

Logan nodded. “Head on a swivel.”

Now that he was ready, Cable grabbed the keys to the Mustang and headed out but not before clapping Logan on his upper arm.

“Stay safe,” Logan said as Cable passed him.

“Always.” He jogged to the front door and headed out. His first stop was to a flower shop ten minutes away. Cable wasn’t sure what to get until his gaze fell on a gorgeous bouquet of dark red tulips, which reminded him of Sam’s fiery red hair. He would have chosen roses, and as classic as they were, Cable wanted this to be a night Sam wouldn’t soon forget. Roses were always given, and Cable wanted something different.

“Do you want me jazz these up for you?” the woman asked.

“My first date with this guy,” Cable confessed, never feeling as anxious as he did now at getting this right. He’d just met Sam, but Cable knew there was something special about the human. He couldn’t say what. It was just a feeling.

“How much do you want to impress him?” she asked with a smile.

He wasn’t sure how to answer that. How much did he want to impress Sam? “I want him to think about me every time he looks at the flowers I bought him.”

Her smile widened. “He sounds like a lucky fella. Let me really jazz these up so he’ll be swept off his feet when he sees them.”

Cable wasn’t sure if Sam had anything to put the flowers in. “Do you have any vases?”

“I got you,” she said.

By the time she was done, there were white tulips mixed in with the red, and she’d also added slim purple leaves throughout the bouquet. She’d also put the flowers in a stunning hand-blown vase.

“Do you think that’s too much?” Cable asked.

“I think your fella is going to be impressed,” she said with a huge grin. “You have to come back and tell me what he thinks of these.”

Cable doubted he would come back, unless Sam was a flower kind of guy. If he really was knocked off his feet, then she’d just gotten a customer for life.

Or at least for the night depending on how things went.

After Cable paid for them, he set the vase on the passenger’s seat and secured the seat belt around them. He didn’t need them falling over before he gave them to Sam. They were so gorgeous that, if Sam didn’t like them, Cable would put them in his bedroom.

Now it was time to pick Sam up. Cable arrived with minutes to spare. He carefully took the flowers out then walked inside the rundown building, climbing the steps to the third floor. As he approached Sam’s door, he took a deep breath to steady his nerves. This was a first for him, especially considering he was a wolf shifter who had never been on a date with a human before.

Hell, this was his first date since... Well, since he couldn’t even remember when. He’d never been one for the courtship game, always preferring the quick and uncomplicated hookup. But, something about Sam had drawn him in, and Cable wanted to explore this attraction.

He knocked heavily on the door, waiting for Sam to answer, then winced, wondering if his knock was too hard. He could already feel the flutter of anticipation rising in his chest as he heard the sound of footsteps approaching.

Within seconds, the door opened to reveal Sam, who looked breathtakingly handsome in a dark blue dress shirt and a pair of black jeans that showcased his slim legs. Cable couldn’t help but think how easy it would be to peel those jeans off and explore what lay beneath.

Instead, he offered Sam the bouquet of flowers, feeling a sense of pride as the guy’s green eyes lit up.

“Oh my god, Cable. These are beautiful!”

Score one for Cable and the flower lady.
