“It’s so pretty,” she said.

“I know hearts are a little tacky and maybe it looks juvenile—”

“No, it’s sweet.”

“I held on to this for over ten years because there was part of me that couldn’t give up on the idea that one day you might wear it.” He took the box from her hand and pulled the ring out. “I’ll be honest, part of me wondered if I should go out and get something fancier, like with gold instead of silver, or something. But I saved up for this when I was a broke college student and...it feels honest.”

Before she could say anything else, he lowered down onto one knee.

“August, I know we took the long way to get here. But you’ve been in my heart as long as I can remember,” he said. “I want to make it official. I’ll take you out to pick a proper ring that’s exactly your style, but I couldn’t wait a moment longer to ask you if you’d be my wife.”

The tears she’d been holding back spilled over, splashing onto her cheeks as she nodded. “Yes, Keaton. A thousand times yes.”

“This is a placeholder, okay?” He slipped the ring onto her finger and a wave of relief washed through him that it fit, since he’d bought it so many years ago. “But it felt right to finally bring it out of hiding.”

“It feels more than right. It’s perfect.” She tugged him to his feet and threw her arms around his neck. “Deep down, I knew we’d get to this place. We were meant to be, even if our brains took a while to catch up to our hearts.”

“I love you, Augie,” he murmured against her lips.

“I love you, too, Kea.”

His hands traveled across her hips and around, seeking out all the places where she loved to be touched. This time she didn’t even bother trying to resist. With Keaton’s lips on her skin and his arms wrapped around her, and the future laid out like a canvas in front of them, the life they could create together seemed brighter than ever.
