Can’t you see I’m busy, human?

“Come on, you stubborn dog.” He tried again and this time Molly had enough with being told what to do.

She threw her head back and howled at the top of her lungs, as if she were a damn werewolf in a B-grade horror movie. Keaton immediately caught movement in the window of the cabin, and August’s face appeared there.

“Kea, is that you?”

Sighing, he looked down at Molly, who stared back at him smugly.

That’s what you get for telling me what to do, human. I’m in charge here.

Shit.

“How long have you been outside?” she asked as he walked into the cabin and unclipped Molly’s leash, hoping that her voice didn’t betray the anxious energy inside her. For some reason, she felt uncomfortable at the idea of Keaton hearing her talk to the matchmaker.

It felt...wrong. Like she was betraying him.

Except she wasn’t. He didn’t want a relationship and she didn’t want to settle for booty calls. Not that what they shared was a booty call exactly, but the whole “just sex” thing wasn’t her. She wanted more. Sheneededmore. And she respected that he didn’t.

“Not that long,” he replied, but he wasn’t making eye contact.

That’s not a good sign.

“How much did you hear?” She toyed with the hem of her T-shirt.

For a moment, he didn’t say anything, instead busying himself hanging the leash on the hook by the door.

“Kea?”

“Just about how you seem to attract people who want you to be a certain way with no regard for what you want out of life,” he mumbled.

He thinks you were talking about him.

Her heart clenched. “Yeah, people like my parents and all the bad dates I’ve been on.”

He looked at her, wary. “Anyone else?”

“Not you, if that’s what you were thinking.” She walked over to him. “You were holding back last night because you were worried about our mismatched needs. That’s pretty much the exact opposite of someone who doesn’t care about my feelings.”

“You were talking to the matchmaker?” he asked, his shoulders dropping slightly.

“Yeah.” She looked at the ground.

“You don’t have to be ashamed about it,” he said. “I mean, I stand by my assessment that people are awful, but if you want to find Mr. Right, then I’m not going to judge you for it.”

She snorted. “You’ll judge me, alright, but you’ll be smart enough to keep it to yourself.”

A genuine smile tugged at the corner of his lips. “You know me so well.”

“I didn’t want it to seem like I got what I wanted last night and then I was back to checking out other men.” She cringed. “Which I guess is exactly what it is, but that sounds so callous and I don’t mean it that way. It wasn’t nothing, but...”

“It’s not something, either.”

She nodded. “Yeah.”

Except it absolutely was something. Or worse, everything.
