That. That was the sound he’d been imagining, wishing for, all these weeks.

Laughter, and the sounds of desire.

They were the best gifts he’d been given in a very long time. As his lips followed his hands down her body and he parted her legs, positioning his head between thighs as smooth as silk, he vowed to do everything possible to keep this woman in his life.

“Don’t stop.” She gazed at him, catching her bottom lip between her teeth.

He gave a low chuckle, his lips grazing her flesh. “Roger that.”

This woman, and her talent for life and laughter, was everything. Until he could work up the courage to tell her…

He’d show her.

He slid her panties off and began.

Chapter 13

Bryce was pretty sure the air inside Ryker’s apartment, specifically in the proximity of his king-sized bed, was a nanosecond away from combusting. It had to be. There was no way the vibes between them could be any more sexually charged than right at this moment.

Damn, but this guy wasgood.

She enjoyed sex. Very much. But something about Ryker put this experience at next-level hot. She wasn’t sure if it was because he made her feel good about herself as a person, or if it was simply because he had skills. Physical skills. His fingers and hands were callused and rough in all the right ways, and then he’d done this thing with his tongue…she was seconds away from bursting.

“Hey,” she panted, tugging on his hands, his arms, finally his head until he reluctantly dragged his mouth from between her thighs. “I’m going to explode if you don’t stop.”

He gave an evil chuckle, making her insides spasm in longing. “That’s sort of the point.”

“But I really, really want you in me when I do.” She sent a look toward the spartan side tables. “Tell me you have condoms hidden in some secret drawer somewhere?”

He nodded, pointing his chin to the bathroom. “In my medicine cabinet. Hold on, be right back.”

He got off the bed and grabbed a pair of crutches leaning against the wall by the headboard. A couple seconds later, she heard the creaky, metallic sound of a door being opened, then closed.

Then she heard a curse, followed by a loud bang on the bathroom wall.

“You okay?” she called.

Then another curse, and finally Ryker returned. Instead of answering her, he began to methodically ransack the room, rifling through drawers in a dresser against the far wall, grumbling under his breath as he yanked each one open, then closed it with more force than necessary.

“What’s wrong?” Bryce brushed the hair from her face, the glow of foreplay evaporating from her in a slow-rising mist. “Don’t you, erm, have anything?”

Only after he’d gone through all four drawers in his dresser did he turn to her. He tossed a box to the bed, and she made a fumbling catch.

“Oh, you found some.”

“They’re expired. By two years, so they aren’t safe to use. If this isn’t evidence of the fact that I don’t date casually, I don’t know what is.” His face was a portrait of misery as he thunked his fist into the wall, making dishes rattle in a nearby cupboard. His glance went to the clock on the wall. He gave her a pained smile, returning to the bed in only his navy-blue jockey shorts, erection jutting prominently inside the tight material. He set his crutches against the wall and sat down next to her with a sigh. “It’s past ten o’clock. Unfortunately, everything’s closed in town, or I’d run and grab more. Can I…can I ask for a rain check?”

“Hardly,” Bryce snorted, shaking her head. She rolled her eyes, desire battling with embarrassment, until finally lust won out. “I’m not a rain check kind of girl. I’m a ‘finish what you started’ kind of girl.”

Ryker frowned as Bryce got up. “I don’t want you to leave, Bryce.”

“I’m not going anywhere.”

She retrieved her purse where she’d dumped it next to the apartment door and unzipped it, going for the inside pocket. She fished out a strip of three condoms, tossing them to Ryker, who caught them one-handed.

A big grin spread across his face as she lay back down on his bed.

Bryce shook her finger at him. “You are damn lucky. I bought these this morning, just in case. And inquiring minds want to know—are you coming off a three-year dry spell?”
