“Hey yourself. I know. I had to stop at the shop to help Emerson and it didn’t take as long as I thought it would. That just means I can help you with dinner. I mean, if you aren’t done and would like my help.”
“Well, you see, I’ve had this gorgeous redhead distracting me since I left her place this afternoon and dinner is nowhere near ready. And as much as Penny thinks she’s helping me, she’s not.”
Chayse tips her head back and lets out a loud laugh and I’m a goner. I love how she doesn’t hold back her emotions or reactions. I peek behind me to make sure Penny didn’t move to where she can spy and pull Chayse to me as soon as I know the coast is clear. “Come on. I don’t remember where I left the knife when I came to answer the door, and with Penny around, that could be disastrous.”
“Well, it’s a good thing I’m a kick ass nurse, just in case.”
“It most definitely is. You made our first trip to the ER bearable.” We’re just making it into the kitchen when I hear something crash to the ground.
“Penny, are you okay?” I get around the counter to see the milk spilled on the floor. I got it out earlier to get her a drink but got distracted and forgot to pour her some.
“I’m sorry, Daddy. I really thinked I could get it by myself, but then my scooter moved back, and I thought I was going to fall, and I dropped the milk.” Big tears are rolling down her face and even though cleaning up milk was the last thing I want to be doing, I can’t be too mad at her.
“It’s okay, Peanut. I was the one who forgot to get you the drink in the first place. Come here. Let me take you into the living room to watch a show while I get this cleaned up and get dinner finished.” She tucks her head into my neck and just nods. I make it back around the counter to head to the living room when Chayse steps in my way.
“Hey, munchkin. How are you feeling?” Chayse is rubbing her hand in soothing circles on Penny’s back, and it almost makes me cry. She barely knows my daughter, but her apparent concern isn’t something I’m used to. Most of the girls I hook up with think that me having a daughter is adorable until they think they may actually have to interact with her. Not that I ever bring anyone around Penny, but I have mentioned it just to see how they will react with a few who I wouldn’t have minded spending more time with. Most of the time that’s the last time I see or hear from the woman.
Penny peaks out from under her hair and gives Chayse a huge smile. She all but launches herself into Chayse’s arms. Thankfully, I’m used to Penny doing this to Reid every time she sees him, so at least I’m prepared and don’t drop her. She hits Chayse who grunts slightly before tightly wrapping her arms around Penny. I notice that she gingerly guides Penny’s broken leg into a better position on her hip. Laughing she pokes Penny’s nose who also dissolves into giggles.
“I’d say you’re doing pretty good, huh?
“YES! I’m so happy you comes to see us today! But I am kinda mad at my Daddy.” Her adorable smile quickly turns into a scowl which has me wondering what the hell I did to make her mad at me. Chayse apparently finds this pretty funny as she fights the smile that’s trying to pop out.
“He won’t let me put pretty colors in my hair like you! I LOVE purple and I wants to have yellow and purple hair. I would look like a pony from my little pony.”
“I’m sorry that you’re upset about that, but my dad didn’t let me put any color in my hair until I went to college. And even then, he wasn’t very thrilled when I came home with purple hair. And don’t even get me started on my tattoos. He has nothing against them, but he just couldn’t understand why I wanted to spend my money on tattoos when, in his opinion, there’s way better things to spend your money on.”
“I think your tattoos are the bestest! And it was really neat to color them. Do you think I could color them tonight?”
“Sorry, kiddo. I don’t think we’ll be able to do that. I don’t have my special markers with me. I leave those at work so that munchkins like you can use them if they get nervous or scared when they have to come visit me in the ER.”
“Oh, okay. Do you want to color a picture with me instead?”
“I’d love to! Maybe we can make one for your dad?” They’re both staring at each other with smiles on their faces and I can feel mine growing. Maybe I was wrong for keeping my dating life separate from Penny all this time. Or maybe it’s just Chayse who makes me even want to consider it. Whatever happens, I’m glad I asked Chayse here and that Penny’s just as happy to have her in our space as I am.
With the girls out of the way, I get to work on dinner. It’s nothing crazy. Just grilling some burgers, french fries, and some grilled veggies. Dinner is filled with more laughter and silliness. Penny even eats her vegetables without fighting me because Chayse made such a big deal out of how tasty they were.
Once dinner was done, Penny demanded Chayse help her get to bed. It gave me a chance to clean up my mess from dinner and get the living room cleaned up. Hopefully Chayse would be staying awhile, and we could make good use of the oversized couch Reid insisted I needed.
Once Penny’s ready, I read her a story and tuck her in. Thankfully, Penny has always been a really good sleeper. Once she’s down, she doesn’t get up until the morning. She also doesn’t fight her sleep, which is great when you’re a single dad and have to do it all on your own.
I make my way out to the living room and see Chayse curled up in the corner. She has a blanket draped over her legs, her head resting on the arm of the couch, and her eyes are closed. I’m not sure if she’s sleeping, but she looks like that’s her normal spot that she curls up on every night after a tough shift at the hospital. I walk over and brush a strand of hair that’s fallen out of her braid off her face. As soon as I tuck the hair behind her ear, her eyes pop open and a sleepy smile spreads across her face.
“Hey gorgeous. Do you want to take a rain check on a movie?”
“No, sorry I’m awake. I was just resting my eyes. I’ve become really good at relaxing and dozing here and there when I get the chance. The worst part of working in the hospital is the swing shifts. I have control over the schedule and try to not mix the shifts around as much as possible, but we don’t have enough full-time night nurses so inevitably we all end up covering all three shifts. I’ve gotten really good at taking shorter naps during the day to offset night shifts. Come on. Let’s see what we can find to watch.”
She pats the couch beside her, and I can’t resist sitting down and pulling her into my side. We find a comedy that we both like and it’s not long before we’re laughing at the characters on the screen. I’m absentmindedly playing with Chayse’s hair and running my fingers along her back, but when she hitches her leg over mine, my hand caresses her ass down to the edge of those damn cut off shorts and I instantly start getting hard.
