“Do you not want me meeting your parents, Cash?”

“What? Of course, I want you to meet my parents, but you still seem a little off. Just because I need to grab Penny, doesn’t mean it’s the right thing for you after the day you had.”

“Wait, do you think I’m still upset about work?”

“Aren’t you? You seemed lost in your thoughts and very fidgety and anxious.”

“Well yeah, I’m still upset, but that’s not why I am anxious. I’m anxious because I’m going to MEET YOUR PARENTS and I have no idea how to act or how you’ll introduce me.”

I’m a fucking idiot. I didn’t even think about Chayse meeting my parents for the first time when we pulled up to the house. Of course, she’s probably anxious. I know I was as soon as her dad showed up to the house while Reid and I were there working to scope us out. And that was without him knowing that I was sleeping with his daughter. My parents know I’m seeing Chayse. They’d have figured it out without me telling them with how much Pen talks about Chayse this and Chayse that.

I let out a breath and press my forehead to hers as I grab her hands and start smoothing my fingers over them. “Fuck sweetheart. I’m an idiot. I didn’t even think about you meeting my parents. It’s just not an issue to me because you make me so happy, and it seems natural for you to know them. And as far as introducing you, we’re dating as far as I’m concerned. I’m not seeing anyone else, nor do I have any desire to. You’re the only person I think about, want to ditch my dad responsibilities for, and play hooky from work so that I can spend my day wrapped up in you. Is that going to work for you?”

She’s smiling as she plays with my scruff and it’s the best sight I’ve seen in a while. She bites her lip as she nods her head up and down slowly as her hands slide to the back of my neck where she laces her fingers together. She’s slowly leaning in for a kiss but I’m too impatient. I crash my mouth to hers and she moans as she melts into me. This is not the kind of kiss I planned on having in front of my parents’ house, but I just can’t resist her. Hearing a little giggle, I slowly pull away. We both smile at each other as I hear my mom trying to shush Penny.

“Busted! Hope that you don’t mind.”

“Not at all. She’s caught us before. She told my mom who told me and was very interested to talk about the pretty woman with purple hair.”

“Well okay then. Let’s go see sweet Penny and go meet your parents.”

Damn, her confidence is so sexy. She jumps out of the truck and heads to a still giggling Penny who looks like she’s about to launch off the top step even though she’s still rocking a cast. I can’t wait for her appointment next week to get it taken off.

“Hey pipsqueak! Did you have a fun day today with your Grandma?”

“Hi Chayse. Yes, we had lots of fun. We esperimented and made Papa a new food for lunch. He LOVED it so much. He says I should be a cooker when I get older.”

Just then my dad comes out the front door. Probably because he heard Penny making a commotion. “I’m pretty sure I called you a chef, not a cooker.”

“Papa, that’s the samesies. Duh.”

“Well excuse me. I stand corrected.” My dad has his arms raised in surrender which is in direct contrast to Penny with her hands on her hips and an I mean business look on her face.

“Hi, dear. It’s so nice to meet you. I’m Meredith Fowler.” Mom wraps Chayse in one of her signature hugs all the while Penny is wrapped around her leg. Thankfully, Chayse doesn’t seem to mind and returns her hug as she plays with Penny’s hair. Mom finally lets her go and they fall into an easy conversation.

Damn, does the sight of a few of my favorite women embracing do something for me. I honestly did not imagine adding anyone to my dynamic with Penny, but now it’s hard to imagine our future without Chayse in it. It should freak me the fuck out that she got under my skin so quickly but imagining her not here fucks with my head even more. I’m startled out of my spiral by my dad’s hand landing on my shoulder.

“That’s a pretty fine sight there, son.”

“Hell yeah it is, old man. I wasn’t looking for Chayse, but at this point, I can’t imagine her not being around. I know that’s crazy since it’s only been a few weeks, but something just clicks with her.”

“You don’t have to explain it to me, I get it. It was the same way when I met your mother. I was a fucking goner after our first date. Your uncles thought I was insane when I came home and told them I was going to marry her.”

“Hold off on the marriage, Pops. I’m not there yet. We really only just started dating and we’re both pretty career oriented. Who knows what the future is going to bring.”

“That’s fine. I’m just saying. I recognize that look on your face because that’s how I look every day when I see your mother. It’s not a bad thing to find a person who compliments you while making you that happy, too.”

“Cash, come meet Chayse.” With a grin to me, dad heads over and wraps Chayse in a bear hug. She lets out a belly laugh, and I can’t help but join in with them. Mom ushers us inside with the promise of lemonade and fresh cookies. She offers to make dinner, and with Chayse agreeing, we decide to stay and eat with my folks before we head to Reid’s game.

Mom and Chayse are in the kitchen with Penny sitting on the counter when I hear the front door slam open, and my niece and nephew come running in. I didn’t know my sister was coming over tonight, but it doesn’t surprise me that she’s stopping by to snag a free meal. She’s constantly running the kids and is beat by dinner time.

She makes her way into the kitchen where she pauses at the site of Chayse and mom working on dinner. She gets a very know it all big sister look on her face before she makes her way over to me. She pinches my cheek and then gives me a big squeeze.

“Hey kid. I didn’t know it was family dinner night.”

“It wasn’t until mom convinced us to stay here for dinner instead of heading home to make something before Reid’s game. Obviously your spidey senses kicked in if you showed up to snag a free meal, too. You okay? You know I love you and think you’re beautiful, but you’re looking a little worse for the wear.” She tries elbowing me to the ribs, but I’m quick to dodge her after years of experience going toe to toe with my older sister.

“Watch it, punk. But you’re not wrong. I love these squirts, but I am so ready for school to start and get back to a little less crazy routine.”
