After finishing the entire bottle of wine, I change my mind and pull up our messages again. I just started word vomiting everything that has been driving me nuts since Saturday, and everything that happened before that. After several lengthy messages with lots of rambling and a few misspelled words, drunk texting with one eye open is a lot harder than you’d think, I get out of the hot tub and go straight to my bed. I should probably drink some water and take some Advil or Tylenol, but I’m so wrung out after everything that I strip out of my suit and pass out in bed naked.

I wake up the next day to sun blasting into my room, the worst case of cotton mouth I’ve ever had, and a splitting headache. Thankfully the warm summer air is hanging on because I am passed out on top of the covers rocking my birthday suit. I could totally roll under the covers and sleep the day away, but with only a little time left of the warm summer air, I drag myself to the bathroom to get a shower.

I look in the mirror and I look like a hot mess. My hair was damp when I went to bed, so naturally, it’s a wavy mess of tangles. I usually brush it out before I hop into the shower, but that seems like it would just end in a disaster and take more effort than I’m willing to put in right now. I turn the water as hot as I can and take one of the longest showers of my life.

I think back to last night and try to remember how much I drank. I forgot how your perceived sobriety can be compromised when you drink in a hot tub. I do remember typing out several text messages to Cash, but I am so glad that I never hit send. Speaking of, I have no idea where I left my phone.

I throw my hair in a braid and put on an old worn in t-shirt and cutoffs before heading down to the kitchen. I find my phone on the island by the empty bottle of wine. At least that explains why my head is pounding. I like wine, but I’ve always been a beer drinker since more than one glass usually leaves me feeling pretty shitty. My phone is dead, so I plug it in and head to the medicine cabinet to take something to fight off the pounding in my head. I open the fridge and groan at the lack of food. All I want are some cheesy eggs and greasy hash browns and bacon, but my fridge is pretty bare.

Just when I’m about to give up and order something, I hear my doorbell. I have no idea who would be here, but head out to see. I opened it up to find someone standing there with a bag of food from our local diner.

“Here you go ma’am.” A young kid barely in his teens hands over the bag. It smells like heaven.

“Um, thank you, but I didn’t order anything.” He frowns at me as he pulls out his phone to read something.

“Are you Chayse?”

“Yes…”

“Well, then this is for you. It was paid by a Cash Fowler.”

My brows furrow at my confusion. Why the hell would Cash send me food? The kid looks at me like I’m crazy before turning and bounding down the stairs back to his beat up car.

I take the food inside and head to the kitchen. My phone has enough charge that I’m able to turn it on. I leave it on the counter while I go to inspect what goodies are in the bag. After a second, it starts vibrating with several notifications. I snag it and see a few messages from my sister, Landon, and one from Cash.

My heart starts pounding out of my chest as I pull up our messages. Oh fucking hell. Looks like I ended up texting Cash after all last night. The messages are a jumbled mess and are all over the place. It’s very apparent that I had been drunk texting, but all I can focus on is the message back from Cash.

Cash: You’re right about it all baby. I did fuck up, and I am going to do everything I can to make it right. But for now, why don’t you get some sleep. I’ll be seeing you soon.

XoXoXo,

Cash

Holy. Shit! What the hell does he mean he’ll be seeing me soon. My head is reeling, but before I can do anything else, another text message comes in from Cash.

Cash: You should be getting a delivery soon if you haven’t already. Nothing better than greasy diner food to cure a hangover. Hope this helps and that you aren’t feeling too awful today.

See you soon, beautiful.

Cash

I don’t know how to respond so I don’t, but my head’s spinning as I dig into my food. It’s so good and I’m already starting to feel better. I know that if I sit here by myself all day, that I’m just going to drive myself crazy, so I decide to give Spencer a call to see if she needs help with her classroom. She’s already there so I take care of my breakfast and then head out.

Once I get to the school, Spencer meets me in the parking lot and instantly puts me to work carrying in several boxes. She directs me to her new classroom that looks like a bomb went off in it. There are boxes everywhere and a pile of desks pushed up against the cubbies in the back.

“Holy hell, Spence. I don’t think I’ve ever seen your classroom like this.”

“Well, that’s what happens when they are supposed to be done with the renovations for your classroom by the middle of summer, but aren’t and then can’t find any of the boxes that you meticulously boxed and labeled until two weeks before school starts.” She huffs out as she stomps over to a pile of boxes that she starts digging through.

“Damn, that’s awful. But, at least I have the next three days off so I can help you get a shit ton of stuff done.”

“You’re right and I am thankful you’re willing to help me on your days off. But don’t you have Penny’s birthday party on Sunday.”

“Um, yeah, but I don’t know if I’m still invited. I asked Cash if I could keep in touch with her, but he never answered.” I’m fidgety as hell because I don’t want to talk about my drunk texting from last night. But, I also could really use Spencer’s advice.

“Alright, out with it. That sucks that Cash hasn’t gotten a hold of you about Penny, but why the hell do you look so damn guilty?”

I groan as I lift my head towards the ceiling too embarrassed to face Spencer. “I may or may not have drunk a whole bottle of wine last night and then proceeded to drunk text Cash calling him out and being a rambling ass.”
