“Would you maybe like to have dinner together?”

“Sure. How about I text you later. I should probably get back to my class.” Sensing her pulling away, I couldn’t control myself anymore. I thrust my hands in her hair as I slam my mouth down on hers. Finally, she melts into the kiss, and it takes all my strength to stop it before it gets completely out of hand.

I slide a loose piece of hair behind her ear before walking over and scooping up Pat. Poor kid lets out a whimper before he buries his head in my neck.

“I’ll talk to you later, okay?”

“Yes, and let me know how Pat’s doing this afternoon, please?”

“Of course.” I give her a quick kiss before leaving the school to get my little man home and settled. While he sleeps on the couch, I whip up some homemade chicken noodle soup and some bread. Being in my kitchen is exactly what I needed to calm my mind and stop going over my interaction with Spencer. I need to see her tonight and see where her head’s at, because I can’t stand this weird limbo we seem to be in right now.

Pat sleeps most of the day, but I am able to get some soup in him and he keeps it down which I take as a win. I’m so fucking happy he didn’t puke again. I’ll do anything for my nephew, but I am not built like my sister who has an iron stomach. I am super squeamish and am really glad I didn’t have to deal with that today.

I texted Spencer once Olive got home and took Patrick back to their place, but I still haven’t heard from her. I texted her again, but after an hour, still no answer. I decide that I’m just going to drive by her house and if her car is there, stop and see if she wants to go get a bite to eat.

When I make it to her house and see her car, I pull my bike in behind it and park. I half expected to see her standing in the door once I made it up the porch, but she’s nowhere in sight. My bike is loud, so I wonder what she’s doing that she didn’t hear it. I ring the bell and wait what seems like forever before the door opens and Spencer is standing there looking completely wrecked with her hair in a messy bun that’s half falling out and a blanket wrapped tightly around her shoulders.

I scoop her up in my arms before heading back inside and kicking the door shut behind me. I can only guess that she’s gotten whatever the kids have been spreading around, but I don’t want to assume. Either way, she looked dead on her feet when she answered the door, so I made my way straight to the living room to lay her on the couch. My suspicions are confirmed when I see a bucket, and ginger ale sitting beside that couch.

“Awe, poor Sweets. When did it hit you?”

“Not long after you came and picked up Pat. I tried to tough it out, but I came home before lunch.”

“Alright, well why don’t you lay down and rest. I’m going to run home and grab some of the soup I made for Pat and then I will be right back. I’m going to take your keys so that I can lock the door, but you won’t have to get up and let me in if you’re already sleeping.”

“You don’t have to do that, Mav. I’ll be fine.”

“Damnit woman, I know you don’t think I need to, but I really do. You’re my girl and I can’t stand to see you hurting like this. I’ll be back as soon as I can, okay?”

Spencer nods her head yes, but her eyes are already closing, and I can hear her steady breaths as she slowly drifts off to sleep. I readjust the blanket before I lean down and give her a kiss on her forehead.

She’s right in the sense that she doesn’t need me and probably would be okay if I didn’t come back, but my girl has built back up some of those many walls she had, and come hell or high water, I plan on tearing them all to the ground again.

Chapter Sixteen

Spencer

Ihaven’tbeenthissick in forever. I usually get a bug every now and then once the kiddos come back to school, but I’ve been lucky enough in the past to avoid any serious GI illnesses.

I was so glad I was already in the nurse’s office when the first round started. Maverick had just left with Pat, and I was trying to convince myself I didn’t feel as bad as I did. Luckily, there is a bathroom attached to the nurse’s office, so I was able to be sick in private.

I was laying on the table when a substitute nurse came back with another student. Seeing the state that I was in, she called down to the principal’s office and had the secretary run to my classroom to grab my things and inform Aileen that I would be leaving for the day. I felt awful about my students being left with her, but there was no way I was going to be able to make it through the rest of the day.

I barely remember the drive home because I was trying so hard not to be sick again. I have never been so happy to see my own bathroom in my life. I took a quick shower before throwing on whatever comfy clothes were the closest and then immediately passed out on the couch.

When I finally wake up, I vaguely remember Maverick stopping by, but I was so out of it, I’m not sure how long he was here or what we even talked about. I was so tired that I didn’t even grab a water when I laid down and right now, I’m really starting to regret that.

I slowly sit up, but realize that someone else is on the couch with me. I’m a little startled until I sit the rest of the way up and realize that Mav is passed out with my feet in his lap. I could’ve sworn he told me he was leaving, but my memory is so hazy that maybe he decided to stay.

Feeling me stir, Maverick’s eyes slowly drift open and a sleepy smile spreads across his handsome face. It’s hard to tell with his beard, but I’m starting to be able to differentiate all of his little looks. He runs his hands down his face before picking up his phone to check the time.

“Damn, I ran home to grab some of the soup I made for Patrick and when I came back, you looked so cozy that I didn’t want to disturb you, so I just sat down and decided to read one of your books while you rested. I don’t think I got very far before passing out, though. I’ve been working so much to cover for everyone who has been off sick or with their sick kiddos, that my sleep is seriously suffering.”

Seeming to not like the distance between us, Maverick reaches over and pulls me up so that I’m in his lap with my head resting on his chest and his strong arms wrapped around me. It feels so good that I have no doubt in my mind that if I don’t get up to get my water, I will be sleeping again within minutes.

Pulling back so I can look him in the face, I about melt right back into him at his sweet smile. He slowly tucks a strand of hair behind my ear before sliding his large hand down my back and rubbing it in slow circles. I can’t help but smile at the comfort his touch is bringing me.

“Did I hear you say something about homemade soup? I don’t know if my stomach is ready for it, but all of the sudden I am starving.”
