“Don’t say a damn word and stop spying on us. For you own sake, stop spying, you’re bloody awful at it,” he says with a laugh before walking off back into the meeting.

Now there’s just Crow to contend with. One down, one to go.

“What the hell was that, Char?” Crow asks as soon as he gets back to our booth.

“I’m sorry! I’m sorry, I just need to know what’s going on and I know you can’t tell me or won’t tell me or whatever but I need to know, especially because no matter how much Dad doesn’t want me to be involved, I already am.” I spew out the words, unable to stop myself before I take inventory of what I’ve said.

“I know you can’t tell me, I know it’s not that you won’t, I’m just frustrated always being kept in the dark when it’s my life just as much as anyone else’s that’s being messed with,” I tell him with a sigh.

Until Gray disappeared, I had always let my dad keep me away. He didn’t have to try particularly hard because I just wasn’t interested. I was young, naive, and more interested in my friends and my future career than the Club, but between Gray being gone and now, I’m as involved in the Club business as anyone else in the Dark Cobras is, whether they like it or not.

I don’t want to be. I know there’s danger because of it but I had that choice taken away from me the moment people started to dig and found out that my dad has kids. Not as though they had to do much digging and because he has a weakness – two, that meant that despite his best efforts, Gray and I had no choice but to be involved.

And now I’ve got a hit on my head and I have no idea how to save myself, let alone get to the bottom of saving Gray.

“I’m scared, Crow,” I tell him quietly.

“I’ll protect you, I swear to you, Charlie. I will keep you safe. No one is going to touch you. I’d do more than kill and murder, I’d fucking slaughter and torture - burn the world to ashes to be sure you’re safe.” His words whisper to my inner worry and paranoia, knowing that he truly will do anything to protect me, but that I don’t want him in danger anymore than I want myself to be.

“What happened to that guy, the one in the cell the other day. What did my dad ask you to do that you could do this time but couldn’t do before?” I ask curiously.

I haven’t thought about it since it happened with everything else that was going on but there didn’t seem to be any anxiety surrounding him afterwards, unlike the last time my dad had taken him down there to do his mysterious task.

Crow turns to look at me, his face stern, eyes cast low as he says, “Protect you.”

Seven

My dad had insisted that I meet Victor, the Laidens’ President’s son, in one of the meeting rooms. The very same one Tin had just caught me in as it happened.

He felt that I wouldn’t want a show for this particular meeting, which I couldn’t disagree with. I’m not sure if everyone knows of the potential deal up for the offering, but either way I don’t need it to be public knowledge if it isn’t already.

“Are you sure you don’t want me to come in?” Crow asks as we walk towards the room.

“It’s fine, I promise. Go back and finish your food, I won’t be long,” I tell him with a smile that has far more confidence in it than what I currently do.

He laughs abruptly, shaking his head.

“I ain’t going fucking anywhere, Char. I’m waiting outside the damn door,” he tells me sternly.

I roll my eyes but am silently grateful knowing that he won’t be far away. It can’t be the most comfortable of situations for him to be in – standing outside the door while the girl you kissed only hours ago is inside talking about marriage with a stranger. This isn’t a fun scenario for either of us.

I smile up at him timidly before pushing open the door and walking inside.

Victor is the only one in here. I was expecting my dad, or maybe Tin or Dove to be here. I didn’t expect for it to only be us two.

He’s a big guy, with no skin on show, but large enough of a stance even when seated to clearly see that he’s filled out and most likely extremely capable of causing some damage.

He has light mousy brown hair and a relatively soft face. I was expecting a hard faced, intimidating presence and although his presence could certainly scare, I don’t feel that’s something he is purposefully trying to do.

“Charlie, I presume?” His voice is low and the smile accompanying his words much gentler than I assumed it would be.

I can definitely see that this man oozes charm and is the complete opposite of most biker men I know. He doesn’t have the same air about him. He seems more like a well spoken lawyer than an MC President’s son.

“That’s me.” I smile awkwardly as I take a seat opposite him.

He watches me for a moment before speaking, taking me in or so it seems.

“I know this is a little unusual but I assure you, I will not be forcing your hand if it isn’t something you don’t want as well. I just want to make that clear right away,” he tells me earnestly.
