“Breakfast on me in the morning,” he tells me with a smile on his face this time.

I smile back.

“Hash browns t-” We both stop, and I find myself grinning, similarly to the one he holds on his face, as we catch ourselves both saying so at the same time.

He remembers.

“Goodnight, baby girl,” is all I hear as I see the back of him leave as he closes the door behind himself.

Maybe I’m just too tired to think properly but I’m sure there was something wrong. Maybe he’s just not adjusting well, or he’s overwhelmed with the day he’s had. It would be understandable.

Ten

Liam is true to his word, or at least I assume it is him.

I wake to the smell of bacon, and more importantly, hash browns.

I shower quickly, and throw on a plain black, long-sleeved dress, black tights, and a hoodie overtop after brushing the knots out of my semi-dried hair.

I sniff the air around me again, reminding myself of a bloodhound on a mission. The food still smells fresh, so before I have the chance to get distracted and take much longer, I launch out of my room and down the stairs.

There is a spread on the table of cereals, fruit, and fresh juices. I am watching the back of Liam as he is moving something in a pan on the hob, apparently still cooking up whatever he had planned. I can't have taken too long after all.

I realise that he hasn’t noticed I'm here yet and find a smile spreading across my face.

I tiptoe over to Liam, suddenly grateful that I didn’t put any shoes on after all and just as the music on the radio begins again, I jump and poke his sides.

I’m laughing at his surprised startle when he turns and glares at me in mock anger.

Still heaving from laughter, I look down at him still smiling. "Better than I used to be, hey?" I question as I jump away from him and move to turn the bacon on the stove so it doesn’t burn.

The laughter’s still bubbling within me as he sets up the table.

"I could have hurt you, Charlie,” he says sternly.

I'm not looking at him, I'm flipping the eggs now, facing the window instead of the far too serious man behind me.

I spin, ready to apologise, and find him just inches from my face and feel my breath halt.

No. This feels weird.

I’m not a lover of people being in my space at the best of times, let alone after just waking up.

"I’m sorry. I didn’t think,” I tell him as I stare for far too long into the silence alongside his blue eyes. "I used to try and jump scare you all the time, I just thought- I don’t know, I’m sorry.”

"Your dad told me about your boyfriend." I know immediately who he's talking about. I mean, who else if not Crow? There is certainly no other guy in my life coming close to anyone being labelled my boyfriend, although I highly doubt that was the word Dad used to describe him. I also note a series of emotions that cross far too quickly across Liam’s face when he called Crow my boyfriend. I don’t think I'll correct him even though it’s not true. Not yet at least.

Does that mean he doesn’t know about the potential marriage in the works? I suppose he could be on about Victor, though I can’t imagine Liam calling him my boyfriend. If Dad had in fact told him about it, the last thing he would assume was that.

"What about him?" I ask as I spin back around, tending to the food, sticking with the assumption that he’s talking about Crow.

"You shouldn't be getting involved with him or the club.” He huffs, takes a deep breath that I can hear far too loudly, and continues calmly “It’s not the right way, baby.”

His use of the word baby freezes me for a moment too long before I flip back round, glaring at the man in front of me.

"I have just as much of a right to know what is going on. Why can’t anyone get that into their heads?" I hiss out the last few words, cross at him for coming at me the first sober moment he can about my involvement with Club business.

If Crow was right with his suspicions and Liam starts changing things around here, especially with the new recruits, I'll be leaving right along with them.
