She laughs, swatting the pillow to the side.

“Anyway. They were great. They wanted me to join their pack and stay with them after only two weeks. But I was young. And as much as I enjoyed my time with all of them and loved how they made me feel, I was still at the Center. I still had another two years there. They were moving across the country, and I didn’t feel two weeks was enough time for me to really know if I could live with them for the rest of my life. So, even though it pained me, I told them no. Then I went back to the Center after my break was over. A couple months later, I met your dads and... I don’t know. Everything with them just felt right. Meant to be. There was no uncertainty or hesitation.”

Shrugging, she pulls her feet under her. A soft smile plays on her lips as she gets a faraway look.

“I think about them from time to time. From what I know, they had a great life together. They never added anyone new to their pack. I ran into them one year when we were visiting my parents for the holidays. I was pregnant with you at the time, I think, and it was a shock to see them after so long. They were happy for me though and said I looked as beautiful as ever. More so with the pregnancy glow.”

She sighs happily and looks me in the eye. “I know your dads don’t think this is conventional or that it’ll work, but I do. I think it would have worked if I’d stayed with that other pack and there wasn’t near the pull between us as what I noticed between you and River at the Lunar Festival. Of course, there is always the chance that it won’t work out and you’ll be hurt, but that’s life, baby. You’ll never know if it’s going to work if you don’t at least try.”

I blow out a breath. Wow. My mom almost bonded a pack that already had an omega. And he was into her.

“So that’s why you didn’t think I was crazy when I told you everything!”

“Bingo. I don’t think I ever told your dads that story honestly. Not on purpose, but when I met them it’s as if nothing else before them mattered. I forgot about everyone else, and they were it for me. Once they see what I saw all those weeks ago, I think they will get on board.”

Mom pats my thigh and gets up. She turns back toward me at the door.

“I hope he’s being a gentleman and picking you up?” Her brow lifts, and she gives me a pointed look.

“Yes! Even said he’ll come to the door and introduce himself. Please don’t let them embarrass me, Mama.”

“Good. And don’t you worry about your dads. I can handle them.”

I shake my head and laugh under my breath as the door closes, looking back out the window. Then, resting my head against the cool glass, I breathe out and close my eyes. This is going to be good. I can feel it.

They feel like mine. River feels like mine. Something inside of me recognizes on an instinctual level that this feels right. He feels right. If nothing else, I know that. River was made for me. Why? I’ll probably never know, but I can live with that if I get to have him for eternity.

I sit on my little bench for about an hour, enjoying the peace and quiet. The sun is out today, shining brightly, warming my skin as I relax. Birds chirp happily among the trees, perching on limbs and singing their songs. It’s going to be a good day.

The sound of a car pulling up the driveway pulls me from my little spot of contentment.

A whole kaleidoscope of butterflies takes flight in my stomach, nervous excitement rushing in and flooding me. I let loose a shaky breath, smoothing down my shirt and then step out of my room, practically skipping down the stairs.

When I make it to the bottom, there he is. Gods, he’s so handsome. Dressed in a pair of dark-washed jeans and a dark blue t-shirt that stretches across his chest and hugs his arms, I practically salivate as I look my fill of him. River is a beautiful specimen, lean and slightly taller than me. The way his shirt molds to his chest should be a sin or illegal.

I want to be that fucking shirt right now.

Mom invites him in right as he notices me. His eyes sparkle with joy when he spots me, and he walks toward me as I take the last step down. And then there he is. Right in front of me, his scent surrounding me, and I let out a content sigh.

“Hey, Little Bird,” he whispers, kissing my cheek.

A flush works its way down my neck and across my chest. I bite my lip, my body automatically leaning in close to him, wanting to feel the weight of him wrapped around me.

“Hey,” I whisper back.

It’s like we’re in our own little bubble. All I see is him, and he doesn’t take his eyes from mine. His hand grips mine, thumb brushing back and forth against my palm. We’re chest to chest, my nipples grazing the fabric of my bra every time I inhale. It’s delicious torture, being this close to him fully clothed. I want to mold myself to him, to have him on my skin wherever I go.

The spell is broken by my dads walking in. I notice Mom still standing by the door, fanning her face and giving me a dramatic look. I nearly groan but manage to keep it inside. This should be fun.

“Hey, Little Bear. Going somewhere?” Dad asks, pulling me to his side to ruffle my hair and eyeing River up.

After I smooth my hair back down, I slap him on his stomach with the back of my hand.

“Be nice. This is River. He’s invited me to spend the day with him at his house.”

I smile at River, and he smiles back before looking at the three big alphas beside me. He reaches his hand out, offering it to Dad first.

“It’s nice to meet you, sir.”
