“I’m so gonna punish you for that,” I mutter lowly, so only he hears.

His eyes take on a playful gleam as he grins at me. “I’m looking forward to it, baby.”

Ripley

“Fuck my life, Rip. It feels like it’s been forever since we’ve talked. You’ve been ignoring my calls.” Huntleigh accuses, narrowing her eyes at me.

Sitting across from each other at a cute little diner around the halfway point between my parent’s place and Hunt and her Alpha’s, it feels good to finally see her again face to face. It feels like it’s been forever since we went our separate ways, her to her new home and me back to my old one. She’s glowing. Happy. Radiant. I’d like to think I am too, though she hasn’t noticed it just yet.

I’ve missed my best friend so much. Adjusting to not seeing her and Gabriel every day has been challenging, in ways I didn’t foresee. Having River helps. Gabriel was supposed to come today, but he had plans with Sasha already that they couldn’t cancel. Just means that I’ll have to tell him about everything later.

I roll my eyes at her dramatics. “I have not ignored your calls. Besides, it hasn’t been that long.”

“Uh, huh.”

I haven’t stopped smiling since meeting River, and he’s never far from my thoughts these days. The butterflies feel more like a stampede of elephants, and I can’t even complain. Even now, a small smile curls my lips unbidden.

After we got back to his house from our little game of chase, we snuggled up in his big comfy bed and watched a few movies before he took me home sometime late into the night. It felt so good to just lay together, giggling and barely paying attention to whatever played on the screen as we talked and gossiped. We’ve done that quite a lot since that first day of hanging out, as well as other more fun activities.

“What is that?”

I blink out of the daydream of being back in his bed and look at her. Her eyes are wide, her lips parted.

“What?” I glance around quickly, looking myself over to make sure there isn’t some creepy crawly climbing on me.

I nearly shiver in disgust at the thought. No, thank you, to the creepy crawlies.

“That! That little grin you have. And you’re all glow-y and shit.” Her eyes narrow again before she gasps loudly, hitting her hands on the tabletop.

Ah. There it is. I tuck my lips behind my teeth to stifle a giggle of happiness that wants to burst out.

“You met someone! Did you find them? Oh, please tell me you found them!”

She grips my hands in hers. I can feel her vibrating with excitement for me, already going into overload in her mind, no doubt. I’m nervous about telling her about River, but she’s also my best friend. I trust her not to judge the situation. We know there will be many that don’t understand. Who’s to say this will work out, honestly, but I hope with all my being it will. I can already imagine myself falling in love with River. There’s so much I can picture in my future with him if I just let myself imagine and hope.

“Calm down.” I laugh out loud. “Yes. I met someone.”

She lets loose a squeal and the few people in the diner look toward us. I cringe and mouth ‘sorry’ before they all turn around, shaking their heads. I glare at Hunt.

“Sheesh, Hunt. Chill or I’m not giving you the goods.”

A dainty hand claps over her lips as she glares back. Where is Gabriel when you need him?

“His name is River... and he’s an omega.”

Her eyes widen, and she drops her hand in her lap in shock. “An omega?”

I nod, a nervous smile taking over.

“Wow. Okay. Okay. An omega.” She mutters under her breath, “My best friend, an omega, has gotten herself involved with another omega.” She looks back at me. “Well, shit girl. Tell me all about him. He must be pretty amazing to have you smiling like that when he’s not even around.”

I bite my lip. “He’s great. He smells so fucking good, Hunt. Like, one whiff of him makes me all tingly in an instant. He’s playful and fun and Gods, he wants me just as much as I want him. And don’t get me started on the sex.”

I whisper out that last part, leaning across the table conspiratorially.

“Okay, don’t think we’re not coming back to talk about that, because we most definitely are, but let’s circle back around to the fact that you finally found a fucking scent match. I’m so excited! Does Gabriel know yet?”
