She knows all about how much of a pain in the ass my sister can be. I vented to her enough about her over the years as a teenager. Grace isn’t a terrible mother, but she’s not a nice omega. I fear if my nieces present as omegas when they get older that they’ll turn out just like her. How she managed to get such nice alphas is still beyond me. Maybe they’ll keep my nieces from turning into wretched beings like their mother. Or maybe my nieces will be alphas like me. Who knows, she might get screwed, and they’ll be betas, considering how prejudiced she is about betas, saying they have no purpose in a pack. Because apparently, that’s the only thing that matters.

It’s strange that Grace turned out the way she did, considering our parents are two of the nicest people who raised us also to be kind and not to judge a person based on their designation. She missed the memo, apparently. My mother is certainly a kinder omega than Grace.

“Yes, well. Let’s just hope I see as little of her as possible while here.” I mutter.

Agnes agrees before looking back as the bell above the door rings. “I’ll let you two get back to your food. Syn, always great to see you, my love. Make sure you stop in again before you head back home. Ripley, dear, it was wonderful to meet you. I hope I get to see you again.”

“You, too, Agnes. Thank you for the wonderful food.” Ripley replies, smiling kindly at the older woman.

She smiles back at her before looking at me. “I like her.” A wink, and then she heads back to get behind the counter to help the family that’s walked in.

I shake my head at the beta. She didn’t even ask questions or bat an eye at me being here with another omega. If only things would be this easy with everyone who will see us together, especially people I know. I know Ripley said she can handle Grace, but it still makes me anxious thinking about their meeting. I’d just as soon keep my sister from the beautiful omega, but I know I won’t be able to hide her away forever. Ma wants to meet her, and I won’t deprive her of that.

Ripley and I finish our food, chatting off and on as I tell her about my family and growing up in Briarwood. We wave to Agnes as we head out when we’re done, and I see it’s almost time for check-in, so we head directly to our hotel. As soon as we get settled in our room, my phone rings. I nearly groan when I see my mother’s name flashing across my screen, and I have the fleeting thought of ignoring her. But I know my mother, and she’ll just keep calling until I answer. I sigh before swiping to answer the call.

“Hey, Ma.” I throw myself down on the couch beside Ripley.

“Hey, sweetie. Did you guys make it?” Her soft voice makes its way through the speakers, making me realize how much I’ve missed her.

“Yeah. We just checked in.”

“I wish you would have just stayed here instead of wasting money on a hotel, but I suppose I understand why you wouldn’t want to.” A sigh. “Will you be coming for dinner tonight? I’d really love to meet Ripley.”

I glance at Ripley, who looks at me and raises a brow, nodding her head. “Yeah. We’ll be there.”

My mother squeals in my ear like an excited child, making me wince. “Oh, I’m so excited! I can’t wait to meet her. River has been telling me all about her but has refused to send me a picture. The little brat. Be here at five, okay? Is there anything Ripley would like, specifically?”

I raise a brow at Ripley in question, and she shakes her head. “No, she’ll like whatever you make. She’s a lot like River in that regard.” I chuckle, and Ripley rolls her eyes.

“Okay. I’ll see you two in a few hours.”

“Sounds good. Hey, Ma?”

“Yeah, sweetie?”

I sigh. “Can you tell Grace not to be an asshole?”

She snorts. “I can try, but you know she doesn’t listen to me, baby.”

I sigh again as I pinch the bridge of my nose. “Yeah, I know. See you soon.”

I disconnect the call and throw my phone on the coffee table in front of the couch, leaning my head against Ripley’s shoulder. Her arm wraps around my shoulder, and she pushes a hand into my thick curls, massaging the back of my head. I groan and close my eyes.

“I wish you’d stop worrying so much. There’s nothing your sister can throw at me I can’t handle. Promise,” Ripley assures me.

“I know, I just... You shouldn’t have to handle her.” I blink my eyes open and tilt my head so I can look into her eyes.

“It’s going to be okay.” She leans forward, pressing her lips against mine.

I turn my body slightly so I can kiss her better, running my tongue along the seam of her lips. Her fingers clench in my hair as she tangles her tongue with mine. Kissing her is like breathing, effortless and life-giving. I could kiss her for hours and never tire of it. It’s quickly becoming an addiction of mine.

She pulls back, smiling prettily at me. I feel my heart will burst just from that alone. She doesn’t know what she does to me. How tied up she has me over her. Her hand unclenches my curls, smoothing the hair back down. Not that it does much good. It’s always so poofy when I don’t do anything with it. Her fingers play with the kinky strands gently, and I hum.

“I love your hair. It’s so pretty. The texture, the tight curls. All of it. It’s one of my favorite things about you,” she tells me.

“Even when I wake up and it’s a massive lion’s mane poofing out every which way?” I jokingly ask her.

“Especially then. It’s wild and untamed and free. Mine is just smooth and straight, nothing special, but yours is like a cloud in the summer sky. Beautiful.”
