“Micah,” I sigh and continue, “I don’t think this is going to work at all. I had Tyler on my do not send list because he’s a douche canoe, and I can see that has not changed any. And you—well, it’s not you personally. Your scent just doesn’t… mesh with me?”

He nods his head, his shoulders drooping slightly. “Yeah, I get it. What will you do?”

That’s a good question. There’s no one else available to be sent on such short notice, and I don’t know anyone personally that I’m comfortable enough to share a heat with.

Gabriel’s grin and green eyes flash in my mind and my belly flutters, my perfume filling the space momentarily.

I could call him. He said to call if I needed.

This seems like a need, right?

“I think I might have a backup plan,” I tell him eventually, smiling softly with my cheeks burning.

Micah laughs, waving a hand in front of his face. “I see,” he chokes out.

“I feel like I should apologize to you or something…” I say after a few beats, trailing off.

“Nah. You don’t owe me an apology. This is your heat, and you should have people taking care of you that you’re comfortable with. Honestly, I’m slightly relieved I won’t have to share a heat with Tyler,” Micah says, grimacing.

I snort, glad we’re on the same page. I have a feeling that if Tyler were in here with us, this conversation would be much more awkward.

“I’ll go wait for him to come back, so I can break the news to him. You should… You should call whoever it is you’re thinking of inviting. I doubt you have long, and they might want to get things together to bring you for your nest.”

The thought of Gabriel or anyone involved with him bringing me nesting materials makes my chest warm and my core clench.

“Thanks, Micah. You’re a really nice guy.”

He grins a lopsided grin, tilting his head and shrugs. “I try.”

I watch him walk out of my nest, even closing the door behind him so I have privacy. I chew on my thumbnail, pacing back and forth as I work up the nerve to call this omega and ask him if he and his pack would be open to helping me through my heat.

It’s nuts, but just thinking about him being here calms the mayhem going on inside of me, and I know it’s what I need.

What Icrave.

I stop my pacing, straightening my shoulders, and giving myself a mental pep-talk, then I grab my phone from one of the floating shelves that houses the plants that decorate my nest, and scroll to Gabriel’s number.

With a deep breath, I tap my thumb on his name and bring the phone to my ear, my heart flipping in my chest as I anxiously wait to see if he’ll answer.

It’s now or never.

ChapterSix

Gabriel

It’s been an entire day since my run in with Shade, and I’m disheartened to say that she hasn’t called. She’s been all I can think about since, and the need to see her again is riding me hard.

I mean, I don’t know why I was hoping she would, but… Yeah, the disappointment is real.

Which is why I’m on my best friend’s doorstep, so I can whine to her and hope she can make me feel better about this… whatever the fuck it is.

I knock on the front door of Pack Kingston’s home and impatiently wait for someone to answer. I probably should have called to make sure she’s here before just popping up. Or not fucking her omega or one of alphas or that beta of hers.

Godsdamnit.

Maybe I shouldn’t have come.

Just as I’m about to tuck tail and run, the door flings open and there’s my bestie, and my secret crush. Or maybe I just thought she was. I’m seeing her in a much different light right now as I look her over.
