“Yes, sir.”

“Explain yourself.”

“What do you mean?” I ask, about to tell him to shove it, even though I really can’t afford to quit just yet. I haven’t submitted my application anywhere else.

“You let the customers walk out.”

“I didn’t let them walk out. There was a guy in here and he told them to leave, so they did. They didn’t even put up a fight about it. I tried to tell him that you’d be pissed, but he said that you’d left.”

“He’s not in charge of the restaurant.”

“What do you expect me to do? Challenge a big man with a gun?”

“Not let my customers run out like that. You could have called the cops.”

“So could all the other employees.”

“Are you working with him?”

“I don’t even know who he is. Last night was the first time he came here, and he ordered coffee that he barely drank. Besides, he had a gun. I don’t argue with people like that.”

“Very well. Get out of my office. Don’t fucking cost me any more customers.”

“Yes, Mr. Coleman.”

I walk out and see a police officer that I remember from the other day. “Hello, Officer. What can I get for you today?”

“A coffee and a raspberry danish, beautiful May.” He didn’t flirt with me the last time, but I recall he also had a wedding ring on. I look at his finger, and there’s a slight hint of color difference on his finger.

“Coming up,” I answer, leaving without giving an ounce of flirting in return. Looking for a good tip, I’d smile more, make conversation, but somehow, last night changed me. I can’t explain it.

“No smiles for me today?”

“Sorry. I think I’m tired. It’s barely been eight hours since I was here last.”

“Wow, working hard. You need a nice night out. Maybe you and I could get a drink.”

“Unfortunately, Officer Nick Thompson, I’m not twenty-one yet, and when you were here two days ago, you had a wedding ring, so either you’re recently divorced or separated, or you’re playing games. Either way, I’m not interested.” I lie to him because I’m almost twenty-two, but I want to create a greater divide between us.

I walk away from him before he can respond. He smirks and goes to his dessert and coffee. The chime on the door rings, and my head darts to the door at the breakneck speed. It’s not the guy from last night, and my heart sinks.

Stupidly, I’m not sure what I’m waiting for, but I’m waiting for something. My body’s buzzing for just another encounter, even if it’s a brief one. I can still feel him breathing against my ear as he called me a good girl.

“Somebody’s got you interested. You’re overheated, and your nipples are pebbled as fuck. The lucky bastard,” the officer scoffs, walking out of the diner, slipping his wedding band back on his finger. The cheating prick.

I quickly fold my arms over my chest with a humph, annoyed that the sleazy bastard had a point and that my body betrayed me. What if that mysterious man was just as despicable?

Chapter Three

Dario

I managed to stay away from her for a day and a half, but now it’s time to pay her boss a visit and maybe I’ll get another look at my woman. It took all my fucking willpower to keep my distance and not put a tail on her. Soon, moves will be made and she’ll be mine.

My body is so damn heated that I jump into the swimming pool in the middle of the day when I’d normally be working in my office. I do about thirty laps, trying to calm my throbbing erection. It’s warm outside, but summer hasn’t kicked in so I let the cool breeze hit my skin every time I come up, hoping to beat up my hard-on. That doesn’t work. I climb out of the water, aching painfully.

I dress for business and then call on my underboss—my best friend and cousin, Alessio. We have a brief discussion, but tension between us is high as fuck. He doesn’t even want me to go confront Coleman, which isn’t like him, so the entire drive, my mind is split between my woman and my cousin who’s acting a bit out of sorts.

I already know what it’s about—the new maid. His behavior is different, and the attention he’s given her is more than he’s given any female I’ve ever seen. He’s obsessed with her like I am with the little waitress. I need her full name, but I don’t want everyone to be in my business.

For the first time, I have interest in finding my queen, which means that she could be in danger. The risk is great, so I don’t want to draw attention to her until I have everything with my enemies squared away.

I sit down in Coleman’s diner, trying to not react to my woman standing feet from me in that shitty uniform that I ache to rip off her body. The thought of Coleman seeing my hunger for her and using it against me pisses me off.
