“Thank you, Flavio.” I end the call and log in so I can open the files. Frankly, I only care about one file, but I check two others first, just in case there’s spies. When it comes to her, I have to be a little more careful.

Luca has been tailing her, keeping her safe, and for the most part there’s nothing to report. She goes to work and comes home, except when she went to the store down the street from their house with the roommate.

When I read her file, I’m immediately intrigued by her name. May Belle Beaman, and she prefers to be called May. She has a sister named Juniper Beaman. Quickly, I call my housekeeper and I asked her the name of the new maid. “June Beaman, sir.”

“Okay. Thanks.” I call the agency and have them send over her file. She lists her sister as the contact with the same fucking address. This is a major fucking coincidence, or someone is playing me. May graduated from community college this week with a degree in criminal justice.

I chuckle to myself. My daily torment is on the opposite side of the law. As I read the file on my May, I learned everything about her parents, her bank account, and her grades. She’s wonderful, except for her goals. I’m just going to have to redirect that shit.

Storming out of my office, I need to speak with the new maid. There’s a conversation that must be had. May didn’t come to me. I found her, but this one showed up at my door, so who brought her here?

I spot them coming out of a guest bedroom, talking in a hushed whisper when my name comes out.

“Bother me from what?” It amuses me to hear myself being mentioned so I step out, startling the maid who has her arms wrapped around her chest protectively.

A meow gives them away instantly. “Fuck.” Alessio becomes defensive of my maid, ready to slide her behind him as if I’m going to attack the woman. I’ve never put a hand on a female.

“We found him under the bed,” June answers, pointing to the guest bedroom.

“A cat?” I ask, brows raised.

“A kitten,” Alessio answers.

I nod, looking at the little guy, petting the cute little kitty. I wonder if May likes cats as well. Maybe she’ll want one, which means teaching my dogs to behave. “Shit, maybe they came from the estate next door. They have them around to fight the mice that come from the fields.”

“Oh, well. Should we drop him back off over there, then? His momma must be worried and looking for him,” June suggests. Alessio’s on edge, rocking from one foot to the other, and I have to fight the urge to laugh at his disposition.

I smile at her and watch as my cousin does his best to control his jealous reaction. “That’s a great idea. I don’t want my dogs to make a snack out of the little guy.” If this was anyone else, I would have shown what that disrespect would get him, but he’s family and I feel for the fucking fool. “Alessio, after you deal with that matter, I must see you in my office.”

“Yes, Dario.” I return to my office and wait to speak with Alessio about the maid. I have some questions about her hiring process.

I hear Alessio’s footsteps before he knocks. They’re pretty light and distinct, but he’s fucking anxious so they’re a little heavier than usual. “Come in, Alessio.”

“You are way too good at that.”

“Your footsteps are distinct. Besides, I was expecting you. Although I didn’t expect you for another half hour since you would have escorted the maid to the estate next door.” I smack my pen against the blotter and knowingly smirk at my cousin.

“She can handle walking the short distance.”

I shake my head and let out a deep laugh. “Bullshit. You know the guards will escort her over. Still, that’s not why I called you in. I have an issue I’d like to address with you that is of a very delicate matter.”

“I’m all ears.”

“Stop lying to me. I’d rather you deal with your attraction to the maid first and get you back on track than have you do something stupid.”

“I don’t know what you mean.”

“I’m not interested in her, so stop looking at me like you’re ready to take me out when my back’s turned. You’ve been my friend since we were children. We’re family. I love you like a brother, and I wouldn’t expect you ever to betray me, and I hope that you’d expect the same from me. So tell me—do you have feelings for her?”

“Yes.”

“Then go watch out for her before one of the other guys notices how sweet she is, or she notices how handsome and strong they are.” I wink at my underboss. At least I’m not the only one who is that pathetic. Hopefully she’s not playing him because that shit would ruin my relationship with May. He rushes out of my office like an eager puppy.
