“And I think you’re insulting me again,” I said, but my curt tone was maybe undercut by the fact that I poured myself another glass of wine. I was now lying on my side on the bed and listening to Carlton with interest and amusement. “Am I supposed to respond to that?”

“Please do,” he said, eating some strawberries room service had delivered.

“I can admit that his past philandering isn’t something to boast about, and he isn’t very proud of it either. I’m sure there are people whispering behind my back that I’m naïve and stupid. But I don’t care because I trust him.”

Blake huffed. “I wouldn’t trust him to get himself dressed in the morning, let alone being on his own thousands of miles away from you. Don’t you wonder where he is right now?”

“No,” I lied.

“Call him.”

“I’m not going to call him,” I said. “I’m not the type of woman to check up on her boyfriend all the time.”

“I dare you to do it.”

“Don’t be ridiculous.”

“If you do it, I’ll take you to my boat in the marina.”

I wasn’t sure if the conversation had veered off into goading territory, or if we were still being playful. “Not enticing enough.”

“You’ve never been to my boat at the marina,” he said with a sly smile. “It will blow your mind.”

“Meh.”

He leaned forward in his chair and gave me a long, intense stare. “You’re a chicken.”

“Fine,” I said, picking up the phone. I called his cell. There was no answer.

“Now you must really be wondering where he is.”

“No, I’m not. He’s probably out with friends. Heisallowed to do that.”

“I have a better guess. He’s at some bar getting pissed out of his mind. Hopefully he’ll think of you when the blonde du jour rubs her tits all over him.”

Carlton could be crude when he wanted to be, and I had no intention of letting on that he’d found a weakness in my invisible armor. “I am unfazed.”

He rose from the chair and sat on the bed. “I think you’re lying.”

I smiled. “I guess you’ll never know.”

“For your sake, I hope he’s changed. You don’t deserve to be dragged through the tabloids with a nasty breakup. And they will crucify the both of you. They’re expecting him to slip up, to be seen with some woman in a compromising position. I don’t wish it on you, Luna. You’re kind and you’re sweet, and you’re far too young to be destroyed by a man like him. And I fear he will destroy you.”

I rolled my eyes. “I’m a big girl.”

“For some reason you don’t want to believe me, but deep down I think my words are getting through. I want you to know that if he slips up, he is going to answer to me. I’m not going to let him get away with it.”

All these men defending my honor. I wasn’t sure if I was flattered or frustrated. “I’m glad chivalry is not dead.”

He rose and stood at the end of the bed, extending his hand to me. “Why do we have to stay in this boring room? Let me show you my boat.”

“You did promise,” I said, grasping his hand as he pulled me to my feet. My vision swam a little. There had been a lot of wine, but I could hold it.

“There is this great little place on the water. It’s an outdoor café with the best food I’ve ever had. We’ll go there first, then I’ll show you my boat.”

“I hope you don’t plan on getting lucky tonight.”

“I can hope, can’t I?”
