“You got it.” Hannah's voice had a smile to it. “We’ll see you at the wedding?”

“You two haven't RSVP’d yet, so we don't know if we need to add your cards to the seating chart.” I could hear the sarcasm in Milo’s voice.

“Donald and I will be there, and the boys will be staying with my mom. I have the RSVP right here. We’ll see you soon. I hope Clay is okay.”

I rolled my eyes.

“He will be. Bye, Holly. Have a wonderful time, and I’ll see you soon.”

“Bye, Daddy.”

The door closed, and finally, it was just Milo and me in the apartment.

“You can stop pretending to be asleep now,” Milo said, his voice louder than before, no longer caring that I was “sleeping.”

I flopped the blanket down on my lap and glared at the white popcorn ceiling. “Her Kindle was in the bathroom. She had it charging in there for some reason,” I mumbled. “Did she have the charger?”

“You could have told us that when she was running around looking for it, and yeah, I stuffed it in her bag as they were leaving.”

I sat up and pulled my legs to the side of the couch, piling my blanket into a ball and setting it in the seat next to me. “And miss her running around in a frenzy? No way.”

“You did miss it.”

“I heard it,” I grumbled.

Milo raised his eyebrow at me and went into the kitchen, pulling the coffee pot off the hot plate. He already had two mugs on the counter, filling them both. I stood and stretched, walked over to the kitchen peninsula, and took a seat on the bar stool. He scooted a mug toward me, lifting his to take a drink.

“Any fun plans for the day?” Milo asked, his voice still heavy from swallowing his coffee.

I shook my head. “Nope. Same as always, I guess.”

“Ah, staying in and watching TV.” Milo was teasing me, but in the tease, there was a hint of truth.

“When does Holly get home?” I asked, diverting the subject.

“A few days before the wedding. She needs to be there for the rehearsal dinner.”

I looked at the counter and saw the small card that Hannah must have given Milo.2 guests, chicken, was written in Hannah’s neat writing. I narrowed my eyes on the card. To me, it was weird that Milo had invited his ex-wife and her new husband to the wedding. A part of me thought it was for Holly’s benefit, but Madeline had told me that she wanted them there. There was no tension between the two, despite the conflict they had gone through.

“I still can’t believe how close you and Hannah are. I’m just shocked it doesn’t bother Madeline anymore,” I mumbled as I could hear a key slide in the lock.

“What doesn’t bother me?” The door opened all the way, and Madeline appeared in the kitchen. Milo wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her close to kiss her temple.

“Just my relationship with Hannah,” Milo repeated, giving me a side eye. “I think Clay thinks you need to be jealous.”

“Not jealous. It’s weird.” I looked at the granite counter and brought my mug to my lips.

“Why have tension and hatred when we can have an easy relationship? There's no reason to hate an ex. I saw them as I was coming up. I got to give Holly a huge hug goodbye, and she told me she would buy me a magnet.” She narrowed her eyes and looked up at Milo.

Magnets seemed to be an inside joke between the two of them, one that I never understood.

“I came to say bye to Holly and steal some coffee before I head to the office.” Madeline pulled away from Milo and turned to the cupboard.

“Don’t you have a coffee maker?” I grumbled. It’s not that I didn’t love Madeline, I just didn't really care for the happiness she always brought with her. I’d rather curl up on the couch again and play a video game with Milo. Or sleep.

“I do,” she said over her shoulder, “but I’m out of creamer, and I knew Milo would have some.”

I rolled my eyes and took a long drink from my black coffee.
