He lifted her onto the desk she’d cleared, and she held her legs out so he could remove her panties. “Clara, you’re the sexiest woman I’ve ever met.”

He lowered his mouth to hers again, and Clara arched her back, feeling very much like the woman he said she was. She didn’t mind if it wasn’t true for every man in the world.

She just wanted it to be true for Scott, and by the way he kissed her, she knew it was.

After they’d finished, she quickly dressed while he tucked himself back together. Not a minute later, his radio beeped and a male voice said, “Approaching the dock at Sanctuary. We’re going into gate four. Switching controls and visuals in thirty seconds.”

Scott turned to the controls, already re-dressed. Their love life had increased and improved dramatically in the past year, and when she was a simple passenger, it seemed to take so long to get the ferry lined up and docked. When she was Scott’s secret lover in the control room, trying to redress so she could disembark with everyone else, it took mere seconds.

She slid on her second sandal just as he said. “We’re flush and in,” into the radio.

A chime sounded, and that meant they’d open the exits soon.

Scott turned to her and she stepped into his chest and kissed him. “I love you,” she whispered to him.

He crushed his mouth to hers again, and when he pulled away, it was almost painful. “We’re signing the papers tomorrow afternoon.”

“Yes.” She hadn’t heard a question, so she cocked her eyebrows at him.

He gathered her into his arms and slow danced with her. “I put in for the whole day off, the same as you.”

Clara wrapped her arms around him. “So I should ask Jean if Lena can sleep over at the lighthouse.”

“Nope.” He grinned at her. “I already asked your mother.” He kissed her again, and Clara really could get lost in the touch of this man.

As she slipped out of the control room and hurried down the narrow walkway, she felt for the wedding band on her left ring finger. It sat there, hard and hot and letting her know that she was Scott’s, and he was hers.

It felt really good, and Clara smiled to herself as she flowed into the crowd getting off the ferry.

Now, she just needed to make sure everything was good with Robin, and she might be able to truly enjoy life here on the cove—with her family and all of her new friends.

ChapterThirty-Two

Robin rose from the bench outside The White Whale as the tall, curvy form of Clara Shields got out of the car that had just pulled up to the curb. She smiled at the driver and then faced the restaurant.

She saw Robin, and her smile grew bigger and brighter. “Hey,” she said, coming toward her. “I hope you haven’t been waiting long. I caught an early ferry and had to stop by Eloise’s mother’s to grab something and take it up to the inn.”

“Five minutes,” Robin said. “I wondered when I didn’t see you on the ferry.”

Clara only smiled, and Robin told herself she wasn’t hiding anything. “Should we go in?”

“Sure.” Clara stepped toward the door and opened it. Robin let her say they had two people for lunch, and she let her follow the hostess first.

They sat down and Robin said, “I’ll have water with lemon, please.”

Clara took another few moments, flipping the menu to find the drinks. She asked questions about the teas and the lemonades, and then she ordered a London fog. Robin marveled at her level of confidence, and she wished in a lot of ways that she was more like Clara when it came to getting what she wanted.

“Is Mandie coming home for Thanksgiving?” Clara put her arms on the table and folded her hands over one another.

Robin’s smile appeared instantly. “Yes. We’re picking her up on Wednesday morning.”

“Are you coming to Appetizer Hour at Alice’s?”

“Yes. You?”

“Wouldn’t miss it.”

Robin nodded, secretly pleased. She’d suggested Appetizer Hour to Alice, and she’d run with it. Robin didn’t mind, because she didn’t want to host everyone at her house and then put on a big Thanksgiving feast too.
