“Did you really shove a straw between my ribs?”

Most of that night is filled with moth-eaten holes. Big gaps in my memory, which bothers me way more than taking a bullet in the chest.

“Yeah.” Yet again, Booker dismisses what he did.

“Like one of those wrapped in paper? Or a used one from an exercise bottle?”

“Yup.”

“Which one?”

“Paper straw.”

“Kind of an odd thing to have laying around.”

“Bring that up with Isabelle. I’m always on her about leaving stuff like that in the car, but thanks to her…” He shrugs and doesn’t bother to complete the sentence.

“At least it wasn’t full of your spit.” I look to Booker, realizing only after the words leave my mouth, that may not be a question I want answered, but I can’t help myself. “Please tell me it wasn’t used.”

“Dude, I wouldn’t put a used straw in your chest.” Booker shakes his head and swivels in the stool.

The thing is, he totally would. If it meant the difference between saving his teammate or watching me die in front of him. He’d lick the damn straw clean, then do what had to be done.

This isn’t the first time Booker’s saved my life.

Or the lives of the rest of our team.

If not for him, Brady would be dead, burned to a crisp in that explosion that nearly took all of Bravo out of action over a year ago in Cancun. Rafe wouldn’t be with us either. He lost a leg in that explosion, and only because of Booker’s quick actions managed toonlylose a leg instead of his life.

Hayes and Alec each lost some fingers. I’m lucky to still be walking with the amount of shrapnel that peppered my body. Booker’s the only one who made it out of that shit show without injury.

“The tech team moves fast.” Booker changes the subject and jerks his chin in the direction of the nonstop stream of people moving equipment into the room.

“I’d move fast if Mitzy was on my ass.” I try to laugh but end up in a coughing fit instead.

Booker glances out the door where Mitzy’s high-pitched voice can be heard pushing her team to move faster.

“She’s like a pint-sized drill sergeant.” There’s an honest-to-goodness smile on Booker’s face.

“Never seen a drill sergeant with rainbow hair, but she does get them to double-time it.”

Booker snorts and shakes his head. “Ain’t that the truth.”

As Mitzy promised, the room fills with her tech team and all their gear. The rest of Bravo team and Doc Summers hold up the walls, trying to stay out of the way.

“What did she say?” Booker points to Doc Summers.

“Says two weeks at least, but if I’m a good patient, she’ll let me out in a few days.”

“Damn. That’s rough.” His face twists with emotion. Concern paints his face and the corners of his mouth pull down. “You know we’ll get her back.” Booker looks away, his face a stone mask.

“I know.”

But I want to be the one to save her.

Not enough to delay a rescue mission, but I have plans for Scott. Fucker’s going to eat lead.

Another twenty minutes pass before Mitzy and her team are set. Like Doc Summers mentioned, in addition to finding Kaye, Mitzy’s testing the operational readiness of her team.
