“Do they know about Barbi?”

“They do.”

Brady pulls to a stop and Zeb and I climb out. He hangs back with Brady, pretending they have something to say.

I know the truth.

He’s giving me space to reunite with my friends.

“Oh my God.” Carmen wraps me in a full body hug. “We’ve been so worried.”

“Are you okay? Do you need to see Skye?” Rosalie hugs me too. “Are you hurt? Injured?”

I don’t know what I say. It’s a mumbled mess of tears and joy.

“Did they tell you about Barbi?” I pull back and wipe my tears.

“She’s tough and if Alec’s with her, she’s going to be all right.” Carmen glances at Zeb. “I’d say it was a PJ and sofa night, but I have a feeling a certain Guardian wants to spend some time alone with you.”

I steal a glance at Zeb and catch him staring at me.

Using both hands to wipe my face free of tears, I look at my friend. “You don’t mind if I…”

“Girl, he’s exactly what you need right now.” Rosalie grabs my hands and smiles. “And he’s coming this way.” She squeezes my hands and bounces a little on her feet. Sharing an excited look with Carmen, they squeal with excitement then take several steps back.

“You look like you need to sleep.” Zeb takes my hand in his. “Come, let’s get you in bed.”

Somehow, I have a feeling me, bed, and Zeb have very little to do with sleep.

He guides me inside the building and I pause on the threshold. After what happened, I’m grateful to be back within the safety of Guardian HQ, but mostly, I feel as if I’ve come home.

When we reach my quarters, Zeb closes the door behind us. “How about a warm shower? Then bed?”

“We? Or me?” I twist my fingers, incredibly nervous.

“What do you want?”

“I don’t want to spend the night alone, but I don’t know if I’m ready for anything more than that.”

Zeb leans against the wall. “I’d love to stay and hold you through the night.”

“And that’s it?”

“Not for a lack of interest on my part, but how about we start with that shower? I’ll be right out here if you need me.” He pats the bed.

“You won’t leave, will you?”

“After everything I went through to get you back?” He arches a brow. “Never.”

“Isn’t that what you do? Rescue people? Eventually you have to leave them behind.”

He kicks off from the wall and prowls toward me. “That may be, but I’ve never done this to one of my rescues.”

The temperature in the room rises sharply as Zeb cups my cheek. I lean into his touch, loving the tenderness of his fingers on my skin. What I’m not prepared for is the way his lips crash over mine. Or the way he plunders my mouth with primal power, claiming me as his own as he takes what he wants.

He makes all the bad thoughts in my head disappear.

My entire body ignites with sensation, and all of that sensation courses through me, until it becomes an inescapable ache between my legs.
