I continue to stay in the quarters given to me at HQ, which makes it easy to attend my therapy appointments at the Facility. Our townhouse feels different with Barbi missing. I don’t like spending time there when she’s not there. Zeb says the Guardians are hard at work, and I feel it. There’s tension and energy swirling in the air as everyone works desperately to find Alec and Barbi.

I feel it too, and better understand the worry Carmen and Rosalie felt when I went missing. I understand what Zeb felt when Dean Alder shoved me into the car and left him for dead, but I have faith in the Guardians. They’ll find Barbi. Alec too.

Until then, I do the work to manage my trauma, and secretly plan how to beat Zeb at his own game.

He doesn’t know it, but there’s no way I’m losing our bet. With a smile on my face, I get to work, and when I come home, I know there will be a Guardian in my bed who loves me more than life itself.

And I love him just as much.

We’ve been through hell, but I look to the future with renewed hope, excited for whatever comes next. With Zeb by my side, whatever that will be is going to be wonderful.

Cara’s Protector

SNEAK PEEK

For the secondtime in my life, I walk away from everything I know and venture into the unknown.

After a harrowing escape, and enduring several agonizing hours wedged into a cramped middle seat in the back of economy, I find myself in another unfamiliar place, with no name, and utterly clueless about what comes next.

The moment I disembark the plane, the pandemonium of San Francisco’s bustling airport amplifies my already frazzled nerves.

I close my eyes, regulate my breath, and steel myself to face what comes next.

I’m here.

I’m alive.

That’s all that matters.

It’s time to start life number three—maybe this time, I really will disappear from those who want me dead. I scan the crowd, looking for my newest protector.

The airport teems with the hustle and bustle of hundreds of lives, if not thousands. People dart around me in all directions. Public announcements blare over the public address system, people shout, kids wail, tired parents attempt to navigate the chaos without losing a bag, a child, or a spouse. Occasionally, a runner sprints by frantic to make their flight. Harried gate agents strive to keep the crowd in check while placating disgruntled passengers with unwavering smiles.

The sheer energy of the place is overwhelming. My constant companion, anxiety, spikes my heart rate, tightens my chest, and turns my palms into a sweaty mess.

After the Witness Protection Program failed to safeguard my new identity, another organization took over my protection. Although I’m not sure what to think about the Guardian Hostage Rescue Specialists, they’re the ones who stepped up to protect me. It’s a daunting name, but I’m neither a hostage, nor do I need rescuing. What I require is protection from men who want me dead.
