“The chief is saying that it’s arson too. Same accelerant as the library.”

“Dammit! I was really hoping it was something normal. Like wiring or smoking.”

“Nope. He’s got an investigator on his way out here. It looks like it’s a serial arsonist.”

“Great. Just fucking great. McCall is there, isn’t he?”

“Yeah.”

“Good. I’m off for the rest of the night unless it’s important.”

She chuckles. “Good for you, Sheriff. She’s a nice lady. The kids love her.”

“Who said anything about the librarian?”

“You just did!” She laughs and then clicks off.

“Woman should be a fucking detective,” I mutter under my breath.

We pull up to her house and I can see that it’s dark. I step out and stalk up to her. “Why don’t you have any lights on?”

“I didn’t expect to be so late.”

“Well, you are. So I think you should just automatically start leaving a light on.”

She gets her crutches under her and grins, shutting her door. “You know you’re awfully bossy considering that this isn’t your house.”

I move in closer and grab her purse. “Yeah, it’s funny isn’t it.” I open her purse up and get her keys again. “Which is your house key?”

She glares at me but hands me her key back. “You hang out in my car. I’ll be out in a minute. I just want to check and make sure that there’s nothing inside.”

“Fine.” She crosses her arms and I nod to my car, not moving.

“I assume you’re not going to move until I get in your car?” I nod and smirk at her, chuckling. “Now you’re getting it.”

I walk carefully up to the door and get my revolver out, opening the door and sweeping inside. One dark corner after another, I turn on every light I run across until the house looks like there’s a party inside. I put my gun away and then walk out the door to get her.

“It’s all clear. You can go in. Let me help you.”

She eyes me with narrowed eyes. “I can go in myself.”

I grasp her elbow in one hand. “Yep. I know. But I’m not leaving you alone tonight.”

Her mouth drops open and there’s that pretty little pink mouth with the full lips that I desperately want to kiss. “I don’t think so, Sheriff. I’ll be fine.”

“Too bad, I’m not leaving.”

She puts her lip out and I want to bite it, tug it. Make love to those pretty lips. “I want you to. If you stay, can’t I charge you with trespassing or something?”

I help her hobble up the porch steps and chuckle. “Do you really think I’m gonna give you ammo to use against me?”

“I don’t know what you’re going to do right now. You’re acting freaking weird.”

“I’m really curious, Hartley. Have you ever cussed in your life? Or do you just have cutesy names for your swear words?”

I help her inside the door and she glares at me. “I do not like swearing. So I don’t swear.”

“Would you? And if you would, what would make you?”
