Before I can ponder it further, the floorboards creak behind me.I freeze, ice trickling down my spine.

Please let that be Nikolai.

“Find anything interesting?” Anton’s rumbling voice stops my heart in my chest. I clap a hand over my mouth to stifle a small scream as I whirl around to find him leaning against the door frame. His eyes hold an ominous glint as he takes in my flushed cheeks and tousled hair.

Fuck!

Oh fuck!

“Anton, I didn’t expect you to be here,” I stammer, trying to regain my composure. “Nikolai and I were just playing hide and seek.”

“Ah, yes, Nikolai.” Anton’s voice is smooth as silk, but there’s an undercurrent of danger in his tone. He takes a step toward me, his tall frame filling the room with his presence. “I’ve sent him for a walk with Luka.”

Fuck. He must have expected to find me here and prepared for a confrontation.

Or a fucking killing!

Oh my God!

“I… um… That’s nice.” Shit, what kind of a response is that? “Look, I never meant to come in here,” I blurt. “It was just part of the game.”

“Is that so?” Anton raises an eyebrow, his gaze never leaving mine as he steps forward and circles me like a predator stalking its prey. “So what have you discovered while snooping around?”

I swallow hard, knowing I’m treading on dangerous ground. But I can’t let him see my fear; I need to show him that I’m not easily intimidated.

“I didn’t come here to snoop, Anton. I swear, Nikolai and I were just playing.” It’s not entirely a lie – we’d definitely started this out as a game.

“In my bedroom?” He doesn’t look convinced. “I told you it was off-limits, remember?”

“Well, I…” I fumble for words. Shit! “Okay, fine,” I finally huff; there’s no sense in avoiding the inevitable. If he’s going to kill me, there’s no way I’m stopping him. “I was just looking for some answers,” I admit. It may have started as a game, but the minute I opened that door, I knew I was walking a fine line.

“Answers?” He comes to a stop in front of me. His scent surrounds me, making it difficult to think straight. “Tell me, Scarlett, what kind of answers did you think you’d find here?”

My pulse races as I meet his intense gaze. There’s so much I want to ask him – about his past, his connections, the danger that seems to follow him. But I know he’ll never give me the truth, not willingly.

“It doesn’t matter,” I say with a shrug. “I was just curious, that’s all.”

“Curious?” He takes another step toward me, his eyes gleaming. “Or perhaps you were hoping to find something…else?”

Damn, he’s arrogant!

But a blush creeps into my cheeks at his insinuation, because I can’t completely deny it. I open my mouth to protest, but before I can speak, he closes the distance between us and captures my lips in a searing kiss.

Any resistance I had melts away as I’m swept up in the heat and passion of his embrace. He backs me up against the wall, pinning me in place with his body as his hands roam over me as if he has every right to. I moan into his mouth, my own hands tangling in his hair to pull him closer.

By the time he releases me, we’re both breathing hard. “Is this what you came for?” he rasps. “Another taste of what you can’t have?”

“No,” I whisper, but we both know it’s a lie. I came here seeking the thrill of the chase, the excitement of discovery…but most of all, I came for him.

A smug smile curves his lips. “You’re a terrible liar,Zayka.” He leans in, his breath hot against my ear. “You want me.” It’s a statement, not a question.

My heart pounds wildly in my chest. I know I should deny it, put distance between us before I get in too deep. But the truth slips out before I can stop it.

“Yes.”

The single word is all the invitation he needs.

With his palm against my chest, he shoves me backward until my butt connects with the dresser.
