In the end, my body wins out over my mind. I roll her onto her back, pinning her wrists above her head as I capture her mouth in a searing kiss. She arches up against me with a soft moan, her lips parting to allow my tongue to plunge deep. I lose myself in her taste, in the feel of her body writhing beneath mine, so responsive and willing.

The scent of sex lingers in the air, a visceral reminder of how I took her last night. How we finally both collapsed, spent, and sated in each other’s arms. But still, it isn’t enough. I want more of her, all of her. She’s like a goddamned drug.

“Take me…” Scarlett breathes against my mouth, her eyes dark with desire. She wraps her long legs around my waist, pressing the evidence of her arousal against my hardening length. “I need you, Anton.”

I close my eyes, every muscle in my body tensed. It’s one thing to simply fuck her, but this feels like…more. I can’t have more.

If you keep letting her in, it’ll be the end of things.

“Please,” Scarlett whispers, her nails digging into my back. “I want you…all of you.”

A growl rumbles in my chest as the last of my restraint evaporates. I crush my mouth to hers, letting loose the beast inside. She’s mine, if only for this moment. The rest can come after. She cries out as I plunge into her welcoming heat, her nails raking down my back. There is no tenderness here, only raw need and possession.

I drive into her again and again, relentless, chasing the oblivion only she can give me. Like the goddamned drug she is.

“Harder,” she gasps, writhing beneath me. “Oh God, Anton, harder!”

I grip her hips, pulling her up to meet each savage thrust, the bed frame creaking under the force of my passion. Scarlett shatters around me with a scream, her inner walls clamping down like a vise. The pleasure-pain of it sends me careening over the edge after her, my release tearing from me in a ragged groan.

For a long moment, all I can do is breathe. She rests beneath me, her fingers lazily combing through my hair. I know I should move, should break away from her before it’s too late, but I can’t seem to make myself care. Not yet.

“You’re thinking too much again,” she murmurs. Her lips brush against my jaw, soft and teasing. “Stay with me a little longer.”

I close my eyes, wishing for the blissful oblivion that silence may bring, if only for a little while.

“What do you want from me?” I ask roughly.

“Tell me what’s on your mind,” she says. “What’s got your eyes so clouded?”

She gazes up at me, her expression open and guileless. I stiffen, old wounds torn raw by all that’s happened these past hours.

“There’s nothing to tell.” The lie tastes bitter on my tongue. Scarlett’s eyes narrow, seeing right through me.

“Don’t do that,” she says sharply. “Don’t shut me out.” Her hands slide up to cup my face, forcing me to meet her gaze. I try to pull away but she holds me fast, her grip surprisingly strong. “Talk to me, Anton.” Her voice softens, pleading. “Please.”

I struggle against the urge to give in, to bare my soul to this woman who has somehow slipped past all my defenses. But the words spill out before I can stop them.

“I’m not used to this,” I say hoarsely. “What we’re doing here…”

Her brow furrows. “You mean being here with me?”

I nod once. “It’s…close. Too close.”

“You don’t like to be close to anyone?” She gnaws on her full bottom lip.

“I did. Once.” I can feel myself teetering on the brink of saying too much. I stop short, old grief welling up to choke me. Scarlett strokes my cheek, her touch gentle and soothing.

“Your wife?” she asks. I feel myself stiffen.

“How do you know about my wife being dead?” I try not to snap.

“I’m sorry.” Her expression darkens. “Nikolai… Well, he… I’m sorry, I just needed to know more about this world you’ve brought me into. But it’s not his fault; he’s a kid. He doesn’t know there are rules around these things.”

I fight down a swirl of annoyance. I’ve been a fool to think that not talking about it would make it go away. It could never go away. The guilt eats at me daily.

“Yes. She’s gone,” I finally acknowledge.

“What happened?” she asks quietly.
