I snatch it from the drink holder, seeing it’s Kenzie calling before pressing it to my ear.

“Yeah?” I say.

“Been a while, pal,” he drawls in his Scottish accent. “How’s life?”

My nostrils flare, gripping the steering wheel a little tighter, knowing this isn’t just a social call.

“Life is life. What do you want?”

His chuckle travels through the receiver. “Still a sorry cunt I see,” he says, then pauses before continuing, “Remember that favor?”

As if I’d forget what he did for me.

“I remember,” I mutter.

“Good, ‘cause I need your special skills set in Colorado Springs.”

“I’m busy.”

He laughs. “Tough.”

I stay silent, my eyes traveling over to Lucy who’s looking out the passenger window, most likely pretending not to listen. Dread circles around my throat like a snake at the thought of bringing her with me—to one of Black Plague’s chapters no less. The image of Lucy in a room full of bikers is enough to give me fucking hives.

But then…

I’m not fragile.

Her heated words float back to me, the clear determination in her tone before I fucked her against the wall. And fuck. How good she felt when I finally did.

I clear my throat, my attention landing back on the road ahead, trying not to derail figuratively and literally.

“How did you know I was close by?” I finally say.

Another laugh. “I didn’t. Just a happy little coincidence, isn’t it?”

I grunt in reply.

“When can you get here?” he asks.

I check the time on the dash. “Late tonight.”

“Sounds good, see you then.”

I hang up and throw my phone back in the middle console.

I let the silence fall inside the car. Half lost in thought, the other annoyed that I’m about to disappoint Lucy.

She’s the first one to speak.

“What’s going on?” Her tone is light and airy.

I chew on my words but then finally say, “There’s a job up in Colorado Springs.” I drum my fingers on the wheel, looking at her. The disappointment I was worried I’d find is missing, instead, her expression is curious and open. “I have no choice, Luce. Only for a couple of days, I promise,” I say, trying to sound apologetic.

She studies me for a few seconds. “You’re taking me with you?”

“Of course,” I answer immediately.

Staying silent for a few beats, her eyes brighten. “Okay,” she says with a wide smile.
