I shake my head, swatting images of my ex-boyfriend from my mind. I lean my head back against the wall separating me from the passengers and pop another handful of chocolatey goodness into my mouth.

“I swear on the Lord’s holy green earth if the man in 12C doesn’t quit trying to cop a feel every time I walk by, I’m going to knock him out and ask forgiveness later.” Eve stomps to the back and sits in the seat opposite me with an exasperated sigh.

“Can you blame him for wanting a little hot cocoa?” I wiggle my eyebrows at her, and she shakes her head, her eyes narrowed.

“Don’t you start with me, Kit Kat,” she points a finger at me, unable to hide her smirk. “Maybe he’d be down to settle for your churro behind instead of this fine quality chocolate.”

The three of us have a ton of nicknames for one another. After ten years together we could fill a book with every crazy pet name we have thrown out. But Eve’s go-to name for me has always been Kit Kat. And since Tommy and Eve bicker like a married couple, I affectionately call them Ma and Pa.

I shrug. “Ma, we can always put some ex-lax in his drink.”

“Remind me never to get on your bad side, Kit Kat.”

“Can you believe the guy in 12 C just tried to grab my ass as I walked by?” Tommy huffs and leans against the wall beside me. I try to hide my candy, but I know he sees it when he taps my shoulder and puts his hand out for some.

“You too, Tommy Thai?” Eve looks like she is ready to fist fight the passenger in 12C.

“No, Eve,” Tommy shakes his head, munching on the M&M’s he is not supposed to be eating. “You two just talk loud as hell. Did you two forget you’re on an airplane?” He pops one more piece in his mouth and points a finger at Eve, his eyebrows nearly touching in a frown. “And don’t even get me started on that ridiculous Tommy Thai nickname when you know damn well I’m Filipino.”

“It’s honestly mind boggling that the company allows us to work together when we bicker and snack like a bunch of old people at the home.” I snicker and stretch my back until it cracks.

“Still stuffing your face, I see, Princess.” Tommy nudges me with his hip.

“What are you trying to say?” I look up at him with a smirk. “It’s Thanksgiving. I was under the impression I could eat as much as I want without judgement.”

“One of two things is going on, Cate.” Tommy crouches down beside me so we can look each other in the eye. “A. You are eating your feelings because the holidays are approaching. 2. You’re eating your feelings because you’ve met a man and are stressing about messing it up.” He snatches the pack of M&M’s away from me and sits in the jump seat next to me. “So, spill,” he pops another piece of candy in his mouth.

“I thought you were on a diet?” Eve pointed out while filing her nails.

“This isn’t about me,” Tommy snorted. “We’re here for Cate. So, tell us about him.”

“It’s not like that,” I try to say but Eve is quick to interrupt.

“Ohhhh, he must be gorgeous. Did you get all tongue tied when you were out with him?”

“Or did you babble on incessantly about nothing?” Tommy piggybacks.

“Or did you say something so awkward it made you want to burrow in the ground and hide like a gopher?” Eve grimaces, resting her hand on my knee.

“Hard to believe I call you two friends.” I shake my head and swat her hand from me.

“Friends, co-workers, roommates.” Tommy shrugs. “Bottom line is we’ve known you for a decade, Cate, so either you tell us about him or we’re going to have to follow you every time you leave the apartment.”

“Alright, alright,” I relent, grinning ear to ear. “I was at the coffee shop a couple of days ago and he walked in.”

“By the massive smile on your face I can only assume it’s love at first sight,” Eve swoons.

“Eww, no.” I shake my head. I am not quite the romantic she is.

“Let her tell it,” Tommy squints Eve’s direction to which she promptly responds with sticking her tongue at him. “Childish.”

“So, love at first sight.”

“She’s not sixteen, Tootsie Roll.” Tommy smirks and ducks to avoid Eve swatting him.

“Don’t call me Tootsie Roll.”

Tommy blows her a kiss, “Every time you call me Tommy Thai, I shall call you Tootsie Roll.”
