The bartender finally makes her way to us and asks what she can get us. Tommy asks for a beer. Eve would kill me if she saw me chugging a beer in my velvet emerald gown, so I play it safe and order a glass of merlot.

“When are you planning to ask her?” I scan the faces around us to make sure Lauren isn’t around to overhear of the proposal.

Tommy frantically pats the inside pocket of his suit jacket and his eyes ease when he feels the ring sitting nice and snug. “I was going to ask during the countdown but I’m afraid she won’t be able to hear me ask her. So, I’m going to ask her as soon as I muster enough courage.”

The bartender brings us our drinks and I take a sip. “She is a lucky woman.”

“I’m the lucky one.” Tommy snags a shrimp appetizer from a passing waiter and pops it into his mouth. “I have waited a long time to try Theo Bennett’s food.”

“And?”

“If the shrimp is any indication, I don’t see myself ever leaving this restaurant.”

“That good, huh?” Theo’s voice sounds behind us and we whip around to see him standing with his hands deep in his pockets, a warm and inviting smile on his face.

My heart skips a beat.Hellfire and broomsticks my boyfriend looks good. Thinking of him as my boyfriend sends a delicious shiver down my spine.

Tommy extends his hand to shake Theo’s and bobs his head with excitement. “Your food is amazing. You know how to throw a party. Thank you for inviting us.”

“It’s my pleasure.” Theo’s eyes meet mine and flashes of his hands on me last night ripple through my head. “Hey, you.”

“Hey,” I whisper, heat searing my skin.

Tommy’s gaze bounces from me to Theo. He swipes his beer from the counter and slips away.

“You look beautiful.” Theo’s hand grazes mine, our pinky fingers twisting together.

“You do too.” I shake my head. “I mean, you look handsome, not beautiful. Although, you are beautiful.”

Theo laughs and leans in to kiss me. His lips on mine feel like fireworks exploding on the 4thof July. His hand slides to the back of my neck and I fight every urge to jump into his arms and wrap my legs around his torso.

When he pulls back, he flashes that wicked grin of his and I squeeze his hand.

“The party was too late for my parents to come but they wanted me to tell you they’re looking forward to seeing you again for dinner.”

A lump forms in my throat and my eyes sting. The fear of them discovering the truth and hating me almost cost me Theo. And here they are excited to have me back over for dinner.

“You told them about us?”

Theo cocks his head to the side and runs his fingers from my neck down my jawline. “I figured since you’re actually my girlfriend now that it would be appropriate. Is that alright?”

I bob my head quickly, shooing the tears away. “This just feels real now. Like we’re really doing this.”

Theo kisses my lips again. “You and me, babe.”

“You and me,” I whisper.

“So,” his eyes dance with mischief and his hand is resting on my thigh. “Maybe you could stay at my place tonight?”

Yes!My mind roars. “I’d like that.”

My eye catches sight of Eve snuggled up with a man across the room. I can’t make out his face because Eve is blocking my view of him. Without realizing it, I am walking away from Theo weaving through several clusters of people until I finally catch a glimpse of him. My mouth drops.

“Would you look at that?” Theo follows me and wraps his arms around my waist, his chest resting against my back. “They make a good-looking couple.”

“I didn’t know Isaac was here.”

The moment I met Isaac I knew Eve would be all over him. Too bad I didn’t put money down on it.
