“Wow,” is all I manage to say as I unbutton my coat to throw it over the back of his leather couch, catching sight of the fireplace roaring in the corner. It’s so cozy.

When I turn to face him, I catch him eyeing me head to toe. I realize my V-neck shirt is showing off more cleavage than I anticipated.Hell.

He tilts his head, blinking his eyes a couple of times, and says, “I wasn’t sure what type of food you would like so I went the safe and traditional route.” The crinkles around his eyes draw a smile from me.

“It smells amazing.”

“Beer? Wine? Water?”

I would kill for a beer right about now, but I am afraid of what other atrocities will come out of my mouth and accept the bottle of water.

“This is a nice place,” I sit on one of the barstools as he grabs two white plates from a cabinet.

“I like it,” he nods. “My Mama thinks it screams bachelor.”

“Well, it does,” I agree. “But to be fair, you are a bachelor.”

“This is true.”

“So…” My eyes meet his. My goodness those eyes are tempting.Focus, Cate, focus.“You uh…you didn’t tell me you were famous.”

Theo rubs the nave of his neck and crinkles his nose. He looks embarrassed. “I wouldn’t say all that.”

“Oh please!” I chuckle, hands whipping around my face as I talk. “As soon as I told my roommates about you, they freaked out when they realized that I didn’t know who you were.”

Theo smiles and leans closer, his elbows resting on the countertop. “You told your friends about me?”

Hellfire.

“What’d you tell them?” His eyebrows wiggle, teasing me to answer.

“Well,” I snort, “I didn’t tell them much because I don’t know much.”

“Touché,” he laughs, tipping his beer toward me.

By the shameless grin on his face, I know he knows I am not telling the entire truth. But I can’t admit to saying he was the most gorgeous man I have ever laid eyes on. Even if it is true.

“So, we just dig in or…?” I change the subject before he can ask anymore questions and before my stomach growls like the beast that it is.

He takes my plate and puts a little bit of everything on it. He sits on the other side of the island and once we start eating, he asks, “Have you changed your mind?”

“About?”

“Us.”

My heart skips a beat at the wordus, but I clear my throat and as casually as I can, I say, “No. You?”

Theo shakes his head as he shoves a spoonful of potatoes in his mouth. “No.”

“Then why ask?”

“You seemed to be having second thoughts while standing outside on my stoop.” Theo’s gaze meets mine. Although I can sense him teasing me, I don’t see the same crinkle around his eyes when he smiles.

His comment throws me, and I start choking on the sip of water I just gulped. I cough for at least twenty seconds, slapping my chest, as if that is going to help, before recovering.

Why can I not function like a normal human?

“Are you alright?” He asks, genuine concern written all over his perfectly symmetrical face.
