“Gross, isn’t it.” My eyebrows bounce up and down.

“I don’t want to offend him.” It looks like Theo is mustering every bit of strength to force himself to be affectionate with the Sphynx.

“You can stop whenever it becomes too much. He knows what he is.”

Theo retracts his hand as soon as Mr. Whiskers turns to glance at him. “He is…”

“Repulsive?” I offer, while I sip the cup of coffee Theo made earlier.

“That seems too strong of a word for him.”

I shrug as the cat hops to the floor. “It is what it is.”

Theo’s gaze meets mine. “I hate to do this to you, but I have a few meetings I have to get to this morning. Will you be alright?”

For some reason, the thought of him leaving feels like a punch to the gut. But I nod. “Absolutely. Don’t worry about me. I’m a big girl.”

“Well, if you need anything, anything at all. Just call me and I’ll come back.” He sits on the couch and puts his shoes on then his coat. “Promise me.”

“I solemnly swear that I am up to no good. Oh wait…” I flash a teasing smile his way hoping he picks up on theHarry Potterreference.

“That’ll cost your House ten points.”

Hell. A hot nerd.

“Alright, alright.” I lift my hands up in surrender. “I promise, if I need anything, I will call you. Happy?”

“Yes, Catalina. Very.”

He strides up to the front door and I turn around on the stool to face him. I stand up and thank him again for his help the night before.

Theo leans in, arms open for a hug, and I wrap my arms around his waist. This must be what a sliver of Heaven feels like. He is all lean muscle and for a split second I wish I hadn’t gotten this close to him because now I really don’t want to let go.

“Wow.”

We both whip our heads toward the front door neither of us heard open. Tommy is standing there gawking like an idiot.

“Looks like someone had a good night.” His grin is so wide I fear his face will split. “Please, let me be the one to tell Eve.”

I release Theo and cross my arms over my chest. I dare a glance up at Theo and he is rubbing the back of his neck, smiling down at me.

“Well,” Tommy snorts, “aren’t you going to introduce us, Cate?”

“Right,” I point at Tommy with my thumb. “Tommy Mendoza, Theo Bennett. Theo Bennett, Tommy Mendoza.”

Theo extends his hand and Tommy shakes it. “It’s nice to meet you, Tommy. Cate has told me a lot about you and Eve.”

“And she’s only mentioned you a few hundred times, too.” Tommy smirks at me, knowing very well he’ll pay for that comment in snacks and soda.

“Good to know she talks about me.” Theo’s hand brushes the small of my back and I hide the shiver that creeps across my body. “And here I thought it was only me.”

What does he mean by that?I search his green eyes, but they don’t reveal their secrets. His hand skims from my back over to my hand and he squeezes it before saying, “Sorry I can’t stay longer.”

Tommy steps out of the doorway allowing Theo to pass by. “Nice to meet you, Theo.”

“You too, Tommy.” Theo whispers in my ear, “I’ll call you,” before disappearing out the door.

Tommy closes the door and laughs.
